Is CBD the answer to every health problem?
Matthew Colan, the co-founder of SOTA CBD discusses what CBD can actually do with relation to solving a person’s health concerns.
According to Matthew, CBD can help people in LESSENING the number of medicines they need to take in order to deal with health issues.
However, CBD is not a cure-all drug that will magically heal or restore a person’s body. Its benefits are limited, Matthew explains, especially when there are injuries involved. ?
What are your thoughts about CBD’s benefits and limitations? Let us know in the comments.

"How exactly do insects affect plants and fungi?
In this video, Katie J. Field, a professor in plant-fungi interactions at the University of Sheffield in the UK, explains how insects interacting with a plant change how it interacts with fungi below ground. ?
According to Professor Field, plant-insect interaction CAN influence how the plant interacts with its surroundings… ?
The fungus that's growing in the roots of our plants is a lot more than just an appendage. It is a real symbiotic partner, and it's very important for the health of the plant.
If your garden has a symbiotic relationship with fungi, insects may be a threat. ?

Biologist Jeremy Bar studies the tri-partite symbioses formed between the bacteriophage, the bacterial hosts (prokaryotes), and the eukaryotic human cells. The human microbiota interact in all types of interdependencies from beneficial to harmful to somewhere in between. Dr. Barr offers a lively telling of what we've learned about bacteria and viruses as they make their way in the human microbiome.
He discusses
1. Why one virus infection in your gut might start a domino effect among microbes, affecting multiple biological processes,
2. How a recent discovery provides fascinating evidence of quorum sensing among viruses and an ability to coopt bacterial systems to assess the best time to lyse, and
3. How phage will even package bacterial DNA or other molecular information through horizontal gene transfer induction.
Jeremy Barr is the head of the Bacteriophage Biology Research Group and a lecturer at Monash University in Australia. This podcast continues the series of interviews with contributors to Richard's book on virus behaviors.
Dr. Barr begins with describing the beginnings of his biology interest as a kid obsessed with insects. When he studied biology in university, bacteriophages seemed to him as the insects of the microbiology world and he was hooked. His unique insight and fascination with lifecycle of bacteriophage lends an entertaining perspective to their discussion, such as a description of his favorite virus, the T4, using its threads to tap on a cell to perhaps sense its fitness for infection.
He also has been involved with numerous recent studies that speak directly to virus characteristics and will broaden listener's concept of what viruses are capable of. He discusses viruses ability to sense how dense the bacteria population is outside its host cell to maximize their reproductive success and know whether it is better to stay in the cell or lyse.
He addresses whether he thinks viruses should be considered alive, adding that they are arguably the most successful life forms on the planet and work at the most basal level of life. But, he comments, the argument whether they are or not really doesn't matter. They are everywhere, he says, transporting genetic material through space and time. Listen in to this dynamic conversation to hear more key moments in the bacteriophage life cycle.

Virologist Jonathan Latham explains his view of living organisms in opposition to genetic or biological determinism.
He shares a wide range of thoughts, including
1. A theory of how COVID-19 began in a group of miners in Wuhan in 2012;
2. How our societal structure self-corrects to understanding science through genetic or biological determinism, prioritizing genetics facts; and
3. A different way to conceive of living organisms as constantly changing with nonhierarchical layers of cooperation rather than an over-emphasis on the importance of genetics.
Jonathan Latham, PhD, is the executive director and cofounder of the Bioscience Resource Project. He's the editor of Independent Science News and director of the Poison Papers project, which publishes documents on the chemical industry. In this podcast, he begins by engaging with ideas presented in a previous podcast when Richard spoke with famed biologist Denis Noble. Noble said that there's no privileged level of causation in biology and Latham continues to address this issue, offering his own commentary over the course of the show.
He explains that he became interested in the kind of prominence that scientists give to genes and DNA and eventually came to the realization that there are a lot of flaws in how we think about organisms that stem from adherence to genetics facts and emphasizing the importance of genetics.
He asserts that the only agency that exists in an organism is the one that derives from the organism itself and explains what this means in more concrete terms. He also touches on current projects such as a paper he and Allison Wilson wrote about their theory on the origin of SARS-CoV-2, which he believes was through a group of miners who experienced a mysterious disease in 2012.
After explaining in more detail, he returns to the ideas of genetic determinism and talks about a book he's authoring on the topic.
To find out more, he suggests getting on the mailing list of Independent Science News.
