Like Narai-Juku, Tsumago is yet another famous post town alongside the Nakasendo Highway section of the Kiso Valley during the Edo period that linked Kyoto to Edo, known now as… Tokyo.
Unlike Narai-Juku however, Tsumago-Juku is one of the best preserved post towns in Japan and its residents have gone to great lengths to protect and recreate the ambiance of this ancient post town that was once the pride of all during the Edo Period.
To help step back in time, cars are not allowed on the main street from 10am to 4pm and most, if not all. electric cables and other wires are concealed as much as possible.
Another noteworthy aspect of Tsumago-Juku is the presence of both the Honjin and Wakihonjin, where the Honjin served as a tavern or hotel for government officials while the Wakihonjin catered to the more regular travelers.
At the base of the Higashiyama mountains, near the very important zen temple of Nanzenji is Tenju-An temple. Tenju-An was erected in the early 17th century and is dedicated to the zen master who served Emperor Kameyama in his religious studies.
Tenju-An, like Nanzenji, is very popular for its stone garden and gorgeous pond with its many water lilies.

While we covered Taketomi Island back in 2016, we decided this year to give you another go of this amazing little piece of paradise with one of our walking around videos!
With only 323 inhabitants, Taketomi is a very small village that triples in population during summer. Famous for its perfectly preserved “Okinawa” style houses and sandy streets, Taketomi shines by its simple way of life where time seems to have stopped and where the madness of the world does not seem to have touched this unspoiled paradise.

Located a short walking distance from the famous Kanda Myojin Shrine, Yushima Seido is a shrine dedicated to Confucius, the well known and respected Chinese scholar. Confucianism was very popular in Japan during the latter part of the Edo period (1603 ~ 1867) and Yushima Seido used to be part of Confucian school during the same period.
With its rather simple or spartan design, Yushima Seido is a good example of Confucian architecture during this period and comes with the striking feature of being covered in Japanese black urushi (lacquer). This emphasizes the desire to embody the simple, yet delicate philosophy of Confucianism.

Geto Onsen is a traditional ryokan offering the chance to anyone visiting to enjoy a natural open-air hot spring bath in the earth of the Yakeishi mountains in Kurikoma Quasi-National Park.
Founded in 1134 near by a crystal clear river, the five open air baths of Geto Onsen used to be very popular in the past. But because of its really remote location, an aging population and totally inaccessibility without a car, it gets ignored by foreign tourists. Geto Onsen is slowly dying. Many ryokans around the area now closed and the only ones still open offer only the bare minimum.
It is really sad to see this amazing natural onsen fade away little by little. Despite the spartan accommodations available in the area, I would encourage anyone visiting Iwate to give Geto Onsen a chance.

Best known as the senior’s version of Harajuku, Sugamo and its Jizo-Dori shopping district give you a unique perspective on Japan and it’s senior citizens daily lives.
On this 800m long street you will find no less than 200 shops that sell pretty much everything that a Japanese senior citizen needs and loves. Of course it includes a lot of food and clothing stores but you can also find a great selection of traditional sweets including the Shio-Daifuku, a salty pounded rice cake containing sweet bean paste.
Finally, if you have the opportunity to visit this place, make sure to visit the Togenuki Jizo temple located halfway down Jizo-Dori street where people line-up to wash its sacred statue with water and towel to later press on their body to heal any pain they may have.

Maiko and Geisha are one of Japan's most well known cultural asset but also one of the most misunderstood as well! Now before we even start to talk about Yamagata Amazing Somaro Teahouse and its Maiko and Geisha, we believe that it is important to clear-up a few things about the difference between Maiko, Hangyoku, Geisha and Geiko. A Geisha is a generic term that mean an “Arts Person” and who is a master in music, acting, literature, dancing, chanting and serving people (tea and such), simply put they are artists with many talents.
Now and despite whatever you have been told, there are no Geisha in Kyoto per se. Indeed the term Geisha is reserved for such artists who in the past were located within Tokyo and its surrounding area, where the term Geiko would refer such artist performing in Kyoto and the surrounding area. Simply put you have Geiko in Kyoto and Geisha in Tokyo. However with time and in order to make things less confusing for outsiders, the term Geisha is, incorrectly, used now as a generic term.
The same applies for the term Maiko and Hangyoku. A Maiko/Hangyoku is an apprentice Geiko/Geisha who undergo a five year training before graduating and becoming a Geiko/Geisha.
The difference here between the two terms also comes from where the student comes from. A Maiko is a student from Kyoto and who undergoes her training in Kyoto while a Hangyoku is a student that undergoes her training in Tokyo. Also the term Hangyoku means here “Half Jewel”.
Now that we cleared a few things up, let’s talk about the Amazing Maiko of Somaro Teahouse of Yamagata. Located in Sakai district of Sakata, Somaro is a hub of Japanese culture where you can enjoy the beauty of Japanese traditional dance performed by two Maikos in one of the city's most beautiful traditional houses.
Because of its huge influence in business due to its port, Sakata quickly became a powerful economic hub in the Tohoku region and has such Maiko, Hangyoku, Geiko and Geisha decided to establish their own community in this area and is why their presence so far up north in Japan.

Saisho-in is one of Hirosaki’s most famous temples and features a huge five story, 32.2m high pagoda. It was built in 1667 to commemorate those who died in battle during the reunification of the Tsugaru with Hirosaki. Said to be one of the most beautiful pagodas in the Tohoku region, Saisho-in also features a gorgeous Sanmon (Main gate) which is surrounded by both Japanese maple trees and cherry trees, giving you the chance twice a year to enjoy the temple in all its glory!

Located between Yamagata and Miyagi Prefecture, Mount Zao is the tallest mountain in the area with a height of 1841m. Popular all year long where people go either to ski in the winter or go trekking in summer, Mount Zao is also famous for its stunning Okama crater filled with sulfurous green water. While it is forbidden to get close to the crater itself, the view from Mount Zao and its natural formation is breathtaking and by far our favorite in the region.

Ishikawa Kanazawa Higashi Chaya - 東茶屋街 : Located in Ishikawa Prefecture and a good 2 hours away from Tokyo by Shinkansen, Kanazawa is one of those cities where time has somehow stopped, giving us the chance to enjoy Japan like never before! This is especially true in Kanazawa Higashi Chaya District, which is the geisha district of Kanazawa and as such is one of its most well-preserved areas.
Much more modest than Kyoto’s geisha district, Higashi Chaya does however offer the chance for its visitors to not only enjoy some of Kanazawa’s most delicious treats and tea, but also the opportunity to visit some of the many guest house used in the past by geisha as living quarters (Ochaya Shima Guest House).
If beer and sake are more your thing, rest assured that Higashi Chaya has everything you need, and if you are curious enough you will exactly find what you are looking for in this district with a big selection of traditional bars and restaurants.
