Who Was David Livingstone? (1813-1873) David Livingstone [1] was born in the Scottish city of Blantyre in 1813. At age ten he began working fourteen-hour days in the cotton mill to help support his impoverished family. There he learned by snatching sentences from a book on his spinning jenny, followed by two hours of night school. These disciplines kept him from being totally uneducated. He was converted at twelve, and had a profound spiritual awakening at twenty and resolved to be a medical missionary in China. From that point onward Livingstone studied Greek, theology, and medicine at Glasgow, returning to the mill during vacations to help pay expenses. A Biblical Perspective On Persecution Of Believers First, Persecution is inevitable for Christians: Matthew 5:11-12 Second, we are called to participate in the sufferings of Christ: Acts 5:41 So they departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for His name. Third, God's Word promises wonderful treasures for those who face persecution: Death will bring peace and rest. - Isaiah 57:1-2 The righteous perishes, And no man takes it to heart; Merciful men are taken away, While no one considers That the righteous is taken away from evil. 2 He shall enter into peace; They shall rest in their beds, Each one walking in his uprightness. Fourth, God uses persecution for His purposes: persecution often Spreads the gospel to other places. - Acts 8:1,4 On that day a great persecution broke out against the church at Jerusalem, and all except the apostles were scattered throughout Judea and Samaria. Those who had been scattered preached the word wherever they went. THE GREATEST ANCIENT EMPIRE: EGYPT vs. THE ENSLAVED PEOPLE OF GOD: ISRAEL But, it was even more than that. It was also: God’s People vs. Satan’s People God’s Promise vs. The Curse God’s Power vs. The Kingdom of Darkness Two eighty-year-old men vs. Pharaoh, his armies, and the entire religion of Egypt Shy Moses vs. Proud Pharaoh The Whole Plan of God for Redemption vs. The Whole Plan of Satan for Rebellion Why? These were the: Covenant People Bearers of God’s Promises Vehicle of God’s Written revelation And, Ultimately, the only way Christ could come in God’s plan! The Jews were and are so important in God’s plan. And so in about the year 1445/46 BC, God told Moses to GO. And that is where we start this morning. In lightning-fast flashes, we have a succession of TEN POWERFUL imprints upon the fabric of Egyptian society. A land of mystery and false worship of false gods -- brought face to face with the TRUE God of the UNIVERSE. Turn to Exodus 6:1-7; 7:3 One cannot help but be awed by the splendor of the ancient Egyptian temples. Even the remains of many merely represent the fragments of past glory, the crumbling ruins are a testimony to the splendor that Egypt once enjoyed. The multitude of shrines, inscriptions, and religious objects are a constant reminder as the massive temples and tombs now in ruins are so vivid a reminder that the grandeur of it all, must have been marvelous. However, the myriads of statues that now adorn the museums of the world found in excavations are a grim reminder of the folly of their idolatry. To think those people feared and followed these lifeless gods when faced with the Living and True God of the Universe is tragic, eternally tragic. Psalm 18 is one long testimony to God’s great faithfulness as a shelter, a stronghold, and a sure foundation to all who would trust in Him. And I call this final aspect of David’s life his long obedience. That is what is most evident about David—he sought the Lord for almost all of his life. And-- SEEKING GOD BUILDS A LIFE GOD REWARDS A life that God rewards is a life that personally seeks the Lord. A life that God greatly rewards is a life that has a long history of personal pursuing or seeking God. The sheer volume of information God has given to us about David offers us an incredible opportunity to sift through these chapters and see what long obedience looks like and should be like. This is perhaps the greatest way that David’s life can impact us—by calling us to walk in the power of the Spirit to also have long obedience in seeking God. Psalm 18 is an investment record, recorded by God, of the deposits in David’s account. We know from life that a long-term investment strategy with our money is the best way to go. Money like time is given to us not merely to spend—but also to invest. Jesus spent much of His public ministry talking about money. Of His 30+ parables, more than half speak about money. Money is all around us; it drives the economy of our world, motivates most of the workers of this country, and is the target that most people use to measure their success and happiness. One of the secrets that those who obtain great wealth always talk about is the power of long-term, compounded investments. When we lived and served at a church in New England we saw the reality of that long-term wealth growing power. For six years we lived in a lovely New England parsonage. A house built in the early 1800s specifically for the pastor of the Quidnessett Church. The family that donated the money to build that house was part of the E.I. DuPont family. After the house was built they gave one $25 share of stock in the DuPont Company; they requested that the dividends be reinvested and that the house be maintained on an allocation made annually from that account’s value. That was sometime around 1828. When we moved into that home 160 years later in 1988, the house was lovely, the acre of grounds looked like a botanical garden--and the maintenance account was worth nearly $1,000,000.00! The unbroken compounding of the dividend yield, stock splits, and appreciation of each share through the ups and downs of the Civil War, World War I, the Great Depression, World War II, the Korean and Viet Nam Wars and onward--turned $25 into a million dollars, even after all the expenses were paid for that house. What an amazing power there is in compounded investment in the long haul of American financial history. Financial planners tell us that real wealth is long-term. Even Proverbs said that 3,000 years ago when Solomon said that wealth “hastily gained” is elusive (Pr. 28:20) So Psalm 18 is the investment record by God of the deposits in David’s account. It was written after a lifetime of facing enemies at every turn. First David had faced enemies in the form of the wolves and lions of those shepherding years. Then he had to face the Philistines of both the Valley of Elah (Goliath) and those that surrounded him when on King Saul’s staff. So for all those years before his marriage enemies abounded. HOW TO KNOW GOD IS REAL God has made hundreds of promises to the direct descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob—known as the nation of Israel, the Jewish people. In fact, there are more verses and chapters of the Bible devoted to the Jews, the Nation of Israel, and their future on Earth before the end of the world—than any other subject or topic in all of the Scriptures. All of the promises and predictions that God made are part of His offer to us that identifies Him as the true God. We could boil all of those hundreds of promises down to 12 clear groups. We could even more narrow the field of the hundreds, and the twelve to what we could call the “Big Three” promises God has made. These are the focus of much of world newskeepers these days. These three are red alerts for any student of Bible prophecy. God says I will stake my entire reputation on the predictions that: 1. the Jewish people will be acting as a sovereign nation; and 2. in possession of Jerusalem at the end of days; and 3. they will begin seeking to build a temple, that will cause such a stir, that all the world’s nations will be against them. But, before we go to see the 6th of those promises, we need to start in Isaiah and see who exactly made those promises, and even more importantly, why. The One who talks to us when we read the Bible, God Himself has staked His trustworthiness on whether or not He can accurately predict the future.
