Beyerdynamic M160 Ribbon Mic Review / Test (Compared to SM7b & AEA KU5a)
Today I review a double ribbon mic from Beyerdynamic, the M160. This is a warm and smooth sounding mic with a surprising amount of detail for a ribbon. The top end maintains a very articulate sound that can compliment an electric guitar, but really shines when capturing more intimate acoustic instruments. I also think it works well for spoken word and singing if you want to get a robust low end with a good amount of articulation in the top end.

Today I review the Blue Encore 100; an XLR Dynamic mic from Blue that is a great alternative to the Shure SM58 if you do not like the darker tone of the SM58. It sounds great on voice, and electric guitar, but lacks on acoustic guitar, and also doesn’t do great at ignoring handling noise or plosives.

Today I review another super cheap mic from Neewer, the NW-3U, which goes for around $15.00. This may be one of the best budget USB microphones I’ve come across so far. It does sound a bit mid forward which causes it to sound nasally, and it lacks a bit in the low end causing it to sound a bit thin, but for $15, I don’t think you can go wrong.

Today we look at the brand new Ember from Blue Microphones. This is marketed as a recording and streaming microphone. It has a prominent low-end, as well as a boost in the treble and air to offset that boost. The off axis coloration is excellent on this thing as well. It doesn’t do well at rejecting plosives so you may need a pop filter. All around, it’s a pretty great microphone for the price.

Today we look at a classic microphone from Sennheiser, the MD441U. This mic is fairly flat for a dynamic mic, it offers a super-cardioid polar pattern, and has a built in 5-way high pass dial and high boost switch. You can get some very vintage tones out of this thing with the high boost switch off, and if you’re looking for a more modern tone, the high boost provides that sound. However, the high boost sounds a bit artificial and on spoken word the flat mode can sound a bit nasally.

Today i review the sE Electronics sE7, a small diaphragm condenser which offers a nice low end, neutral mids and a lifted top end which gives you some liveliness but it's not overdone. Like most SDCs it doesn't do great with plosives, but does pretty well with off axis coloration. I also think this mic can exagerate a little bit of sibilance.

Today we’re looking at the Audio-Technica ATH-G1 Gaming Headset. This may be the best sounding microphone on any gaming headset I’ve reviewed. It’s still not better than a standalone microphone, but on a headset, it’s a step above the competition. The headphones are extremely bass forward without sounding muddy or losing clarity in the top end. I should note that if you aren’t a bass-head or you don’t want to feel the impact of your game in your ears, you will hate the headphones.
