***"Stereolab"*** are an English-French avant-pop band formed in London in 1990.
Led by the songwriting team of ***[Tim Gane](https://cutt.ly/BmFnRwl)*** (guitar and keyboards) and ***[Lætitia Sadie](https://cutt.ly/dmFnYuG)r***(vocals, keyboards and guitar), the group's music combines influences from *krautrock*, *lounge* and *1960s pop music*, often incorporating a repetitive motorik beat with heavy use of vintage electronic keyboards and female vocals sung in English and French.
Their lyrics have political and philosophical themes influenced by the ***[Surrealist](https://cutt.ly/imFnOlx)*** and ***[Situationist](https://cutt.ly/ymFnAt5)*** movements.
Although ***"Stereolab"*** found success in the underground music scene and were influential enough to spark a renewed interest in older analogue instruments, they have never had a significant commercial impact. Meaby the key is lost in the interview where ***Gane*** and ***Sadier*** have discussed their musical philosophy - *"to be unique for us was more important than to be good"*.
Despite its semi-archival status, the band’s tenth album ***Not Music***, sounds fresh, and distinct from ***"Chemical Chords"***. It shares the streamlined feel of that album, but many of these songs don’t fit that album’s distillation of lounge, **Motown**, and **French pop** elements - and those that do, sound like warped reflections of them.
These songs take a more cerebral, yet still playful, with some moments that evoke ***"Stereolab"*** quintessential sounds; ***"[Equivalences](https://cutt.ly/Sm3JDB9)"*** rides a descending keyboard motif that the group’s fans will recognize immediately, while the dreamy waltz ***"[Aelita](https://cutt.ly/Um3JGBq)"*** and ***"[Lelekato Sugar's](https://cutt.ly/mm3JFK6)"*** mix of fuzz bass, marimba, and ***Laetitia Sadier*** sweetly whispered philosophical nothings evoke the ***"[Mars Audiac Quintet](https://cutt.ly/xm9iRfJ)"/"[Emperor Tomato Ketchup](https://cutt.ly/um9iOXY)"*** era.
***”Not Music”*** is all over the place in the best possible way, and fans who love the band’s gracefully intellectual side will especially appreciate it. Taken with ***”[Chemical Chords](https://cutt.ly/Lm9obcI)”***, it’s a testament to just how much ground the band could cover while remaining purely ***”Stereolab”***.
***”Two Finger Symphony”*** is the seventh song on the band's tenth studio album, ***”[Not Music](https://cutt.ly/hm9oT4m)”***, released on 16 November 2010 by ***"[Drag City](https://cutt.ly/Wm2chwU)"*** and ***"[Duophonic Records](https://cutt.ly/ym2ckxS)"***.

Copping their name from ***[William S. Burroughs](https://cutt.ly/knKjvcv)*** euphemism for ejaculation, ***"Thin White Rope"*** was founded in Davis, California in 1984. Although the time and place of their formation aligned them with both the Paisley Underground and roots rock movements, the group quickly staked out its own musical territory, divining their own unique brand of dark, surreal, desert rock.
***"Thin White Rope"*** was led by singer/guitarist ***[Guy Kyser](https://cutt.ly/UnHksbT)***, whose harsh, tightly coiled vocals and unsettling lyrics combined to give the band its edge; in the group's first incarnation, Kyser was joined by guitarist ***[Roger Kunkel](https://cutt.ly/ynHkhgk)***, bassist ***Kevin Staydohar*** (soon replaced by ***Steven Tesluk***), and drummer ***Jozef Becker***.
***"The One That Got Away"*** is the sixth and last full-length album by ***"Thin White Rope"***. The double CD is a recording of the band's last show and was recorded live on 28 June 1992, at ***"[Democrazy](https://www.democrazy.be/)"*** in Gent, Belgium.
It comprises the entire show, except for ***"[The Ruby Sea](https://cutt.ly/RmurPu0)"*** and ***"[Moonhead](https://cutt.ly/SmuraTl)"***, which were released as a 7" vinyl single, and ***"Thing"***, which has never been released in any format to date.
Most interestingly, the recording's surprisingly high quality reveals that much of the slickness of the band's album work is due not so much to production, but to the band's presentation itself - as their rhythm section churns through tight rock workouts, guitars lay smooth, atmospheric textures above them in a live format.
It was hot, it was sweaty, it was unforgettable!
***”It's OK”*** is the twenty-first song on ***”Thin White Rope”*** fourth album, ***"[The One That Got Away (Live In Gent)](https://cutt.ly/ImurLim)"***, released under the ***"[Frontier Records](https://cutt.ly/inKjjFP)"*** in 1992.

***”Madder Rose”*** was a New York City-based alternative rock band formed in 1991 in a Greenwich Village apartment, after ***[Billy Coté](http://www.billycote.com/)***, the band's songwriter, was informed by a mutual friend that a woman named ***[Mary Lorson](https://cutt.ly/xml50MY)*** was looking for a project. Cote' and Lorson formed ***”Madder Rose”*** with bassist ***Matt Verta-Ray*** and drummer ***Johnny Kick***.
They had their first gig a few months later, and then, after distributing countless singles, they signed with ***”[Atlantic Records](https://cutt.ly/aml6g7F)”*** the next year.
The band's music has been described as suggesting druggy languor, which inspired the British music press to trumpet ***”Madder Rose”*** as the second coming of the ***”[Velvet Underground](https://cutt.ly/kml6nPs)”***. Their sound progressed from indie pop rock, not unlike peers ***”[Velocity Girl](https://cutt.ly/Hml6Q4O)”***, ***”[Lush](https://cutt.ly/5ml6Uo2)”***, ***”[Helium](https://cutt.ly/xml6A3J)”***, and ***”[Juliana Hatfield](https://cutt.ly/aml6Gb4)”***, to shoegaze and trip-hop.
Some of the attention given to the group after realising debut album ***“Bring It Down”*** may well have resulted from the hype over female rockers in the early '90s, but ***Mary Lorson*** is nobody's stereotype and nobody's fool. With a strong, warm voice - not as forceful as ***[Kathleen Hanna's](https://cutt.ly/tmziaaH)***, not as commanding as ***[PJ Harvey's](https://cutt.ly/EmzigCE)***, but easily able to capture and set a mood - she's endlessly listenable, her lyrics often wryly romantic and intelligent without sounding forced.
***Billy Coté*** takes a key role throughout, true crumbling, melancholic shades on the tearjerking ***"[While Away](https://cutt.ly/FmzPRoz)"*** or the fractured, halfway to ***Neil Young*** squall on ***"[Lights Go Down](https://cutt.ly/fmzShpS)"***.
In the meantime ***Verta-Ray*** contributes some remarkably dark bass work, while at many points drummer ***Johnny Kick*** shows he has an ear for polite breakbeats and rumbling energy that suit the mood as much as more straightforward rock rhythms.
Critics praised ***Madder Rose's*** unique style of chiming, grinding arrangements and haunting vocals. The band sealed its name with the alternative music scene after a main stage appearance at the 1993 ***[Reading Festival](https://cutt.ly/KmziyI1)*** in England.
***”20 Foot Red”*** is the fourth song on the band’s debut album ***“[Bring It Down](https://cutt.ly/EmzOo8a)”***, released in 1993 on ***”[Seed Records](https://cutt.ly/6mzqOsK)”***, an alternative-oriented subsidiary of ***”[Big Beat Records](https://cutt.ly/kmzOhS5)”***, and was produced by ***[Kevin Salem](https://cutt.ly/LmzqYfy)***, member of the alternative ensemble ***”[Dumptruck](https://cutt.ly/2mzOvxm)”***.

# ***The Stone Roses Biography***
***The Stone Roses*** were an English rock band formed in **[Manchester](https://cutt.ly/pEJ1ytv)** in 1983. One of the pioneering groups of the ***[Madchester movement](https://cutt.ly/CEJ1skE)*** in the late 1980s and early 1990s, the band's classic and most prominent lineup consisted of vocalist ***[Ian Brown](https://cutt.ly/VEJ1fkt)***, guitarist ***[John Squire](https://cutt.ly/uEJ1jrj)***, bassist ***[Mani](https://cutt.ly/EEJ1lyI)*** and drummer ***[Reni](https://cutt.ly/AEJ1xN4)***.
Meshing '60s-styled guitar pop with an understated '80s *dance beat*, the ***Stone Roses*** defined the *British guitar pop* scene of the late '80s and early '90s.
***The Stone Roses*** emerged from the remains of ***English Rose***, a Manchester-based band formed by schoolmates ***Squire*** and ***Brown***.
The group began playing warehouses around *Manchester*, cultivating a dedicated following rather quickly. Around this time, the group was a cross between classic British '60s *guitar pop* and *heavy metal*, with touches of *goth rock*.
In December 1986 they recorded their first demo as a four-piece, including the first studio recordings of “***[Sugar Spun Sister](https://cutt.ly/oEIrEVR)***” and “***[Elephant Stone](https://cutt.ly/REIrbPq)***”. By the time the group's sound had changed considerably, with chiming guitar hooks and a strong melody, alienating some of their old fans, but attracting many new ones.
> Again, in 1994. ***The Stone Roses*** create a dense tapestry of interweaving guitars and pulsing bass grooves, but there's no denying that ***"Second Coming"*** is a bit of a letdown. None of the songs are quite as strong as the best on their debut, but there is plenty of good music on the band's much-delayed second record.
> While the songs occasionally take a back seat to the grooves, several tracks - ***"[Ten Storey Love Song](https://cutt.ly/hEIu943)"***, ***"[Begging You](https://cutt.ly/UEIiqZP)"***, ***"[Tightrope](https://cutt.ly/sEIieCk)"***, ***"[How Do You Sleep](https://cutt.ly/1EIiiCg)"*** and ***"[Love Spreads](https://cutt.ly/BEIipyr)"*** rank as true classics.
>
> It might not be the long-awaited masterpiece it was rumored to be, but ***“Second Coming”*** is a fine sophomore effort.

# ***"Ladytron" Biography***
***“Ladytron”*** are an English electronic music band from ***[Liverpool, England](https://cutt.ly/mWpsUji)***. Formed in 1999, the group consists of ***[Helen Marnie](https://cutt.ly/sWpsKhG)*** (*lead vocals*, *synthesizers*), ***[Mira Aroyo](https://cutt.ly/jWpsBZA)*** (*vocals*, *synthesizers*), ***[Daniel Hunt](https://cutt.ly/3Wps2XU)*** (*synthesizers*, *guitar*, *vocals*) and ***[Reuben Wu](https://cutt.ly/mWps5im)*** (*synthesizers*).
The band formed in 1999 when producers/DJs ***Hunt*** and ***Wu*** - a pair of friends who met in the mid-'90s - settled in *Liverpool* after traveling and spinning records in *Japan*.
Taking their name from the ***“Roxy Music”*** song, they recorded their first single, ***"He Took Her to a Movie"*** and soon after, they met vocalists/keyboardists ***Marnie*** and ***Aroyo***. Originally from *Scotland*, ***Marnie*** was working towards her *Bachelor of Arts* in pop music at the *University of Liverpool*; ***Aroyo*** was a *Bulgarian* postgraduate research geneticist at the *University of Oxford's Department of Biochemistry*.
***“Ladytron”*** combined crystalline melodies enveloped in icy textures and rippling arpeggios - with touches of *indie pop*, *shoegaze*, *disco*, and *industrial music*. They described their sound as *electronic pop*, while music journalists have also described their artwork as *synth-pop*, *electronic rock*, *post-punk* and *electroclash*.
While they never deviated much from this sound, they still conjured distinctly different moods on each album.
> The band's debut album ***“604”*** was released in 2001., and has been written mostly by ***Daniel Hunt*** and co-produced by him and ***[Lance Thomas](https://cutt.ly/2WpRyDb)***. The album balances ***Ladytron's*** experimental and pop sides. ***"[Mu-Tron](https://cutt.ly/3Wo1kkF)"*** and ***"[Zmeyka](https://cutt.ly/XWo1WR8)"*** reinterpret noisy, dystopian soundscapes, and the shimmering ***"[CSKA Sofia](https://cutt.ly/XWsIL83)"*** sounds like ***“[Kraftwerk](https://cutt.ly/iWsIUCW)”*** filtered through Broadcast.
>
> ***Ladytron's*** mix of retro songwriting and modern themes is their most interesting, and distinctive, aspect. This subversive streak makes the album's *synth-pop* more progressive - and more satisfying - than its blatantly experimental moments, but either way, ***“604”*** is an exciting debut from a group capable of making overused influences sound fresh again.

***"The Smiths"***were an English rock band formed in Manchester in 1982. Consisting of vocalist ***[Morrissey](https://cutt.ly/7vnQKtF)***, guitarist ***[Johnny Marr](https://cutt.ly/XvnQXo2)***, bassist ***[Andy Rourke](https://cutt.ly/yvnQVIJ)***, and drummer ***[Mike Joyce](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mike_Joyce_(musician))***,
critics consider the band one of the most important to emerge from the British independent music scene of the 1980s.
Based on the songwriting partnership of Morrissey and Marr, the Smiths' focus on a guitar, bass, and drum sound, and fusion of 1960s rock and post-punk, were a rejection of the synthesiser-based dance-pop of the time. The friction between Morrissey and Marr resulted in a flurry of singles and albums over the course of three years that provided the blueprint for British guitar rock in the following decade.
***"Rank"*** is the band's only live album, recorded live at The National Ballroom in London in October of 1986, roughly six months before they disbanded altogether, these 14 songs capture the Smiths performing in full-on rock-star mode.
It’s an essential part of any Smiths fan's collection, and it's an enlightening live peek at a foursome who many deem the greatest band of the 1980s, and more than a few others deem the last great band period.
