Finally! It took way longer than originally anticipated, but - as you can see in this edition - I did run into a few issues, especially those nasty "electrolytics in a can, get two for one!" packs. The original plan was to have the caps replaced and keep "the rest"... but then the resistors also had quite a large drift. There was only a few that were "OK", so I said: skip it, I'll just get the lot replaced too... and that only left a few wires on the tube sockets... which I also changed because of... nastyness. Overall, I replaced all components that are still around these days. The tubes, the head, transformers and the motor are original in the electrical part. There were several minor issues too: like a loose wire that has never seen solder, center tap lines just mashed into the transformer core... well, general fun. The first of the two spools I got had some... ahem... adult entertainment on it. Holy cow... Restoration Project #27 - Sony Trinitron TV Finally, it is time to visit the first CRT TV of my channel! It is - like so many things - a random eBay find. A Sony trinitron one; Model number KV-14LM1E. Why does Sony have so weird model numbers? Oh well; besides the flat trinitron tube, it's a pretty basic model. No teletext and mono audio only. But at least it has on screen display and a remote control with only minimal battery damage. Nice. When it arrived it was looking just like in the auction pictures, but it wouldn't turn on; I only got a "5-blink-error" code. The service manual mentions that that means an out of range value for the IKR or AKB circuit; both abbreviations seem to relate to the same error, I have no idea which is more accurate. Anyhow, I was happily filming the troubleshooting and repair process, but somehow seem to have lost a bit of footage from that timeframe. Yikes. I hope it won't affect other projects; might have accidentally formatted the wrong memory card. These things need to get bigger so one can write on them again! The repair and clean up as well as the adjustments are filmed again, as well as briefly explained. Geometry adjustments are done exclusively via the on screen service menu, so nothing about image size or linearity correction here. Tinkering with Atkelar - this time, here's a full build video for a change! I came across some woodworking topics when I was recovering from an operation in early 2016, and the idea of making a functional device instead of "just another spice rack" intrigued me... A bit of research lead me to the following page and I fell in love with the mechanism immediately: http://lisaboyer.com/Claytonsite/celestialmechanicalpage.htm The plans come almost complete to get going - as noted in the video, the backplane doesn't come with a 1:1 drawing, only a design idea, but as long as you are skilled enough to consider starting this project, that should not be a problem. I made a few select design changes during the build, which are visible in the video but not big enough to warrant mention, as it is long enough as it is. For one, I put some washers behind the wheels, so that I don't end up with wood-rubbing-against-wood - that resulted in a much smoother movement, but required some longer cut arbors. I also didn't have a wood lathe at the time, so I had to use an acryllic sphere to make my moon. The "push arm" that turns over the non-existing days of months (e.g. Feburary 30 and 31) was supposed to be located in front of the day of month wheel, but I discovered it had enough room to go behind without the long spacer. I think this looks a bit sleeker and makes for less bumping hazard on my staircase, where I mounted the calendar.
