Welcome to Making Monday with Herbal Roots zine! I'm Kristine Brown today I'm going to demonstrate how to make an old Appalachian folk remedy called Pink Water.
Poke is a low dose botanical herb but don't let that stop you from utilizing this amazing herb.
I learned this remedy from herbalist Phyllis D. Light.
Pink Water is great for flushing out your body after an illness, when that illness seems to linger.
You will need:
8 Poke berries
2 quart jars, one filled with water
A fork or spoon
A strainer
The following is a suggested guideline for using Pink Water. As always, use discretion and adjust the dosage to you or your child's sensitivities. It's better to use less than more if you are unsure.
Children 2-6 or 35-70 pounds should consume no more than 1/8-1/4 cup over the course of the day
Children 7-12 or 70-100 pounds should consume no more than 1/2-1 cup
Children over 12 and Adults weighing 100-125 pounds consume 1-2 cups
Adults 125-150 pounds should consume 2-3 cups
Adults over 150 pounds should consume 1 quart

Welcome to Storytime with Herbal Roots zine! I'm Kristine Brown and I wrote this story to help you learn about herbs.
Today, I'm reading from Issue 16 - Perfectly Peppy Peppermint (May 2010) which you can find here: https://www.herbalrootszine.com/product/may-2010-perfectly-peppy-peppermint/
You are probably familiar with Peppermint! It is found in many food items, as well as a flavoring for toothpaste, gum, breath mints, and some medicines.
If you take a look at those medicines you find in a drugstore, they will give you a clue as to Peppermint’s use before commercial medicines became more popular. Breath fresheners, mouthwash, chest rubs, antidiarrheal and anti nausea medications, antacid tablets…as you can see, Mint is great for the digestive system and the mouth!
We can use Peppermint in his natural form as a tea or tincture to help with all these issues!
Learn more about Peppermint and hear the story of how Agnes Discovers Peppermint in today's storytime.

Today, I'm reading from Issue 02 - Take a Peek at Chickweed (March 2009) which you can find here: https://www.herbalrootszine.com/product/march-2009-take-peek-chickweed/
Have you ever seen this plant growing in your yard in early Spring?
This plant is edible and has a mild, spinach-like flavor and can be added raw to salads or in a sandwich in place of spinach or lettuce.
Like many other early emerging spring plants, Chickweed is cooling and moistening and this herb can help us with hot, dry conditions in our bodies.
Chickweed loves our skin and helps us with any skin conditions that are hot and dry from angry red rashes, to itchy, dry eczema.
This plant also helps with burns, cuts, scrapes, bruises, and blisters, making it a great addition to salves, along with other spring plants such as plantain, violet, and comfrey.
Internally, Chickweed helps with hot, dry, burning coughs and sore throats.
Chickweed is also soothing to our urinary tract, helping to cool hot, inflamed conditions.
That’s just a few things that Chickweed can be used for!

Today, I'm reading from Issue 08 - Enchanting Elder (September 2009) which you can find here: https://www.herbalrootszine.com/product/september-2009-enchanting-elder/
You might be familiar with Elderberries, even if you haven’t ever used them.
Elderberries are well known for their use to help modulate the immune system which can help your body to fight off viruses.
With the berries’ high vitamin A and C content, elderberry syrup is great to have on hand in the winter to take as a prophylactic against wintertime ailments.
Elderberries and flowers are also antiviral. Elderflowers work great to help fight off colds and flus, as well as help to calm their symptoms.
Elderberry is easy to grow but does need a bit of space as it can grow to 15 feet high and spread out to just as wide.
