House democrats are unveiling two articles of impeachment against president trump today. The articles accuse him of abusing his power and obstructing congress's impeachment inquiry. But the president and House Republicans maintain that he did nothing wrong.
Each article of impeachment stands as its own formal charge. The first accuses Trump of abusing his power to pressure Ukraine to investigate former vice president Joe Biden-- and his business dealings in the country.
Because Biden is running for president against Trump, House Democrats claim Trump's request amounted to an attempt to interfere in the 2020 election.
The second article accuses the president of obstructing Congress' impeachment inquiry.
"We must be clear, no one, not even the president, is above the law."
Across the aisle, Republicans are criticizing the Democrat-majority House's use of impeachment power.
"A unique power of congress to hold the president accountable if they violate a law, and instead now using it against a president because they are afraid he will get re-elected."
President Trump responded to the House's announcement by calling the impeachment effort "Sheer Political Madness!" Tuesday morning.
The articles are expected to go to the House next week for a vote--where Democrats currently hold a 233–197 majority.
If the House approves impeachment, it will go to trial in the Senate. The Senate is controlled 53–47 by Republicans, who have shown little interest in impeaching Trump.
