How to refill the oil in an X-Fusion HiLo dropper seat post w/o disassembling it.

My X-Fusion HiLo dropper seat post wasn't staying up at full extension, most likely cause was loss of oil.

I had installed this 27.2mm dia., 100mm drop seat post on my monster cross bike about a year after I built the bike in 2012. I found that having the saddle height up for proper leg extension while pedaling left me sitting too high for technical descents on some of the local single track. Dropper seat posts are common in the MTB community, but almost never seen on a road or cross bike. That's were monster cross comes in. I figured my bike was a blend of cross and MTB components anyway, so why not install a dropper post.

This is one of the best features of the bike IMHO. Dropping the saddle 100mm (or any height in between) makes a huge difference in the feel of the bike. It's almost like switching from a 700c road bike to a 20" BMX bike. It lets me lower my body down that 100mm and it also lets me shift my weight back behind the saddle with ease for steep drops. And then I can pop the saddle back up to normal ride height in an instant.

This post had always weeped a tiny bit of oil from the seals. It was just wet around there, no obvious leak. But over the years, enough oil leaked out until I lost an inch or two of saddle height. Browsing the net pointed towards low air pressure or lost oil as the likely cause.

I picked up a pint of Maxima Plush 10 WT Suspension Fluid:

and used a 50ml syringe and some clear PVC tubing that fit over the end of the Schrader valve. Remove the valve core, compress the post with the valve depressed, invert the post , attach the tubing and syringe (or funnel) and fill that with ~50ml of oil. Then, hold the valve open and slowly extend the post until all the oil is sucked inside. I cycled the post in an out slowly a few times to flush out all the trapped air.

Then I put the valve core back in and found the post would not compress very far. So I removed the core, compressed the post about an inch, pumping that excess oil back into the oil bottle. Then insert the core, cycle the post inverted 3-4 times (valve open), then turn it right side up, cycles 3-4 times (valve open) and check how far it compresses.

I repeated the above procedure about 3 times in all until I achieved nearly full compression. Installed it back on the bike and took it for a ride and the saddle holds it's position without sagging like I had been doing.
