In this video we learn how to use the Order of Operations, which is known as PEMDAS, to simplify expressions. We simplify the expression 5+2^3+3[6-3(4-2)] using the order of operations. PEMDAS stands for Parenthesis, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition, and Subtraction. A way to remember this is the expression Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally. #PEMDAS #OrderOfOperations #minutemath #algebrahelp #algebra #prealgebra #beginningalgebra #mathhelp #onlinemathvideos #lightboard #math #mathvideos #oer #openeducation #freemathvideos

Intervals of Concavity. Sketch a continuous curve y=f(x) where f(1)=0, f'(0)=0, f'(2)=0, f"(x)‹0 for x‹1 and f"(x)›0 for x›1. We learn how to find the x-coordinates of all points of inflection (POI), find all discontinuities, and find the open intervals where the function is concave up and concave down. We first determine where the function is discontinuous. We then take the second derivative of the function to find its critical points. We then apply the second derivative test to see where the function is concave up and concave down. This is a great introduction into the Second Derivative Test. This is under the topic of Applications of Differentiation with this free online math video lesson. #seconddderivativetest #pointsofinflection #poi #discontinuities #intervalsofconcavity #calculus #derivatives #minutemath #calculushelp

Horizontal Tangents. Find the points where the tangent line is horizontal. We learn how to find the points where the tangent line to is horizontal through various examples. We learn how to find the horizontal tangents of a function. We find the points where the tangent line to the function is horizontal. We indicate if no horizontal tangent line exists. We first find the derivative of the function and then set that derivative equal to 0. We then solve for x. This gives us when the slope of the tangent line is equal to 0, which means this is where the tangent line is horizontal. We then plug our x-value into our original function to find the corresponding y-value. This gives us the coordinate points where the tangent line to the function is horizontal. If the function does not have a horizontal tangent line, we then indicate that no horizontal tangent line exists. We use common derivative properties to solve the derivative of the function. This is a great introduction into derivatives. This is under the topic of Applications of Differentiation with this free online math video lesson. #horizontaltangents #findthehorizontaltangent #tangentlines #derivatives #findthederivative #calculus #calculushelp #minutemath #minutemathhelp #onlinemathlessons
