A loom is a device used for making fabric by weaving yarn or thread. His device did it automatically. He was known as the Japanese Thomas Edison. His son, Kiichiro (Kee Chee-row) Toyoda, who also worked with his father, wanted to design an automobile and started the Toyota Motor Corporation in 1937. According to history.com, “Toyota Motor Corporation was formed as a spin off of Toyoda Loom Works.” So, how did we get from Toyoda to Toyota? Well, according to the BBC news website, Toyoda and the kanji version (which is the Japanese character version) where still in use, but the company wanted the emblem to work in Japanese and in English since they have been exporting to the US quite heavily around that time. So, the company held a competition for a name change in 1936, and, after 27,000 entries, Toyota, which is spelled T-O-Y-O-T-A was chosen. According to BBC news, “The name was chosen ‘because the number of strokes to write Toyota in Japanese (eight) was thought to bring luck and prosperity,...’” However, also according to BBC news, it should be noted that this reasoning is put in doubt because the number 8 is not culturally significant in Japan.
