No it's not the Grateful Dead version (which is also a great song), but rather the traditional American folk song about the tragic folk hero Casey Jones. It was first sung by an engine wiper and friend of Casey’s named Wallace Saunders and set to the tune of a popular song at the time called "Jimmie Jones". There are many versions of this classic and we will probably never know exactly what lyrics Saunders originally sang.
