The Mortal Kombat franchise has existed for almost three decades by now, and in that time, it's spawned a list of highly popular and recognizable characters. Foundational to that popularity is that this cast all met or continued to meet at a particular moment when Earthrealm's future seemed to be at its most bleak.
It's worth noting that all of the games are built upon a great deal of history that precedes the events of even the first Mortal Kombat game. One such legendary character important to the early history of the Mortal Kombat series is the Great Kung Lao.
His life was important in altering the trajectory of the fate of Earthrealm, and in death his importance to the world was made even more important. We'll discuss this character and play around with some interesting possibilities regarding a story that is different for him in this video.
Both the Mortal Kombat and Injustice franchises are still yet to come out with new installments. However, some fans suggest that a new Mortal Kombat game is possibly in Development. The reason behind this speculation is because of a job listing fans found for NetherRealm Studios. These listings that fans have been sharing specifically pertain to a martial arts fighting game. Thus, the assumption of a new Mortal Kombat game being developed.
No official announcements for Mortal Kombat 12 or Injustice 3 are out yet, however, a job listing may have just gotten Mortal Kombat 12 leaked, or it may be Injustice 3 leaked.

Honestly speaking, relying on a job listing isn’t necessarily the best way to identify what game is in development. Fans should also take note of the fact that Mortal Kombat isn’t the only martial arts fighting game NetherRealm has. Injustice, despite being a superhero combat game, is also considered a martial arts fighting game. Also, it’s worth mentioning that Injustice already has two installments, and still a growing player base. Fans of the Injustice franchise have also been long awaiting a third installment of the game.
Let’s not forget that there’s also a possibility that NetherRealm studios could introduce a new IP. Since the studio is well known for fighting games, it’ll be interesting to see a new creation from the team. One thing is for sure though, a new fighting game is in development. For now, we just have to wait and see what exa

Mortal Kombat 12 has seemingly been leaked by a developer on the game. Last year, rumors surfaced claiming that contrary to popular belief, NettherRealm Studios was not working on Injustice 3, but Mortal Kombat 12. Fast-forward and a new photo seems to confirm this. The image comes the way of Jonathan Andersen, a Senior Production Manager at the Chicago-based studio. Taking to Twitter, Andersen tweeted a photo of what appears to be his workspace cluttered with Injustice and Mortal Kombat artwork. That said, if you look in the top right corner, there's a file on the computer titled "MK12_Mast..." There are also other Mortal Kombat files like "Reptile."
The tweet has since been deleted, but not before the Internet got its receipt. And parts of the Internet actually think it's a deliberate leak, which aren't common, but they do happen. The main reason some Mortal Kombat fans think this is the email that's in the background, which contains the following: "our fans eagerly scrape the internet for any trace." It also says to "take extra care with this material." It's all a little bit on the nose.
As noted, the tweet with the image has since been deleted and there's been no follow-up from Andersen, NetherRealm Studios, WB Games, or any other implicated party. No matter whether or not this is a deliberate leak, this is unlikely to change. That said, if it's a deliberate leak, then an official announcement could be imminent.
As always, we will keep you updated as the situation evolves. In the meantime, take everything here -- the leak, and the speculation it has created -- with a grain of salt. While there's little room to doubt the validity of the leak, it's still a leak and not 100 percent official information straight from WB Games PR. Speaking of WB Games PR, we have reached out for a comment. While we wait for information, it's important to remember that NRS -- in particular, its creative director, Ed Boon -- has a reputation for trolling fans. This could be another elaborate example of this, but it seems unlikely.

The finale of Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath leaves the MK Universe at a timeline reset, paving the way for a fresh start in Mortal Kombat 12.
The finale of Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath creates a pathway for a fresh start in the future of the franchise. Since the first game's release in 1992, Mortal Kombat has constantly expanded its lore through background information on its characters, spin-off titles, and even the use of additional game modes such as the Krypt in MK11 or Konquest Mode in Deception and Armageddon. Going into the future of the series, Mortal Kombat 12 could explore this lore further by moving away from its current roster.
Elements of the deeper lore of Mortal Kombat have been present throughout the franchise's existence, but it has mostly been relegated to background history and world-building subtext. The ancestry of Kung Lao, which links him back to Earthrealm's first champion of the tournament, remains an underlying story for the members of the Order of Light and its White Lotus Society. Although this history is often referenced, the series has not taken many opportunities to dive further into it. Instead, the series has focused on its current timeline. However, with the timeline reset at the end of Aftermath's good ending, the groundwork is laid for the series to deviate from its present roster of fighters.
When Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath sets the series back in time at the conclusion of its good ending, players are given a choice to play the final confrontation between Shang Tsung and Fire God Liu Kang as either character. Choosing Liu Kang and defeating Outworld's sorcerer sends the story's finale down the path of a new timeline as Liu Kang uses Kronika's Crown and the power of the Hourglass to begin its construction. In doing so, Liu Kang meets the Great Kung Lao, offering to prepare him for what's to come, which could potentially place Mortal Kombat 12 in the past.
The good ending in MK11: Aftermath places the storyline in the very distant past of the franchise. In doing so, this creates the possibility of a clean slate in regards to its roster. Most characters in the current timeline would not be alive in the era of the Great Kung Lao. Beyond Liu Kang taking the role once belonging to Raiden as Earthrealm's protector, as well as the inevitable clash between Kung Lao and Shang Tsung, this era of Mortal Kombat could - and should - see the introduction of new faces from the past.
Many of the franchise's fan-favorites would not be alive during the timeline of Earthrealm's first Mortal Kombat tournament. However, if MK 12 follows the events of Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath, it gives the franchise a chance to reboot with a brand-new roster of characters in an otherwise unexplored part of Mortal Kombat's history. Rebooting the series by going backwards in time would be interesting, and creating a roster of new characters would flesh out the rich legacy of the franchise.

Mortal Kombat 12 has seemingly been leaked by a leaker by the name of "r00r" made a name for themselves for leaking and teasing various things about MK11 -- such as its roster -- that would later turn out to be true. It's been a while since we've heard from the leaker, but recently they took to GameFAQs to tease fans of the series. More specifically, they left a brief comment stating that "Reiko is back," followed by, "see you next year."
Unfortunately, this is the extent of the tease. Obviously, there's nothing vague about the former claim, but it's not clear if the leaker is teasing that the game won't be revealed until next year or that it will release next year. It seems to be the former, but it could be the latter or even both.
