DECEPTION OF THE DUNYA
Deception Of The Dunya. On the authority of Abdullah ibn Umar (RadhiyAllahu ‘anhuma), who said: The Messenger of Allah (SallaAllahu ‘alayhi wasallam) took me by the shoulder and said,
“Be in this world as though you were a stranger or a wayfarer.”
And Ibn Umar (RahiyAllahu ‘anhuma) used to say, “In the evening do not expect [to live until] the morning, and in the morning do not expect [to live until] the evening. Take [advantage of] your health before times of sickness, and [take advantage of] your life before your death.”

Brief Commentary
This is a very important hadith as it governs how we should be in this life and how we should look at it. This life is a trial, and this hadith reinforces and guides a person in how to deal with the trials of this life
Ibn Rajab said, “And this hadith is a foundation in having short hopes of this life, for the believer should not take this life as a home for him that he feels tranquil in. Rather, he should be in it like he is about to leave, preparing himself for his departure, and the advice of the Messengers (‘alayhim assalam) and their followers are all in unison with this idea”
We see in this hadith how the prophet (SallaAllahu ‘alayhi wasallam) used to nurture his followers and not just teach them academically
Ibn Umar (RadhiyAllahu ‘anhuma) was young, yet he remembered exactly how the prophet (SallaAllahu ‘alayhi wasallam) relayed the hadith to him, and this is a testament to the teaching style of the prophet (SallaAllahu ‘alayhi wasallam)
Dunya (life) is derived from the word دنو , which is to be close/very lowly
This is something that the prophets (‘alayhim assalam) used to teach their people. The prophet (SallaAllahu ‘alayhi wasallam) said, “What is the dunya for me. An example of me and the dunya is that of a traveller who naps under the shade of a tree, then departs and leaves it” [Reported by Ahmad and Al-Tirmidhi]
Ibn Rajab said, “And if the dunya to a believer is not a place of abode, nor a home, then a believer should be with regards to the dunya, in one of two states. Either he is like a stranger living in a land strange to him ,and his main aim is to gather what he requires to return to his home, or like that of a traveller who does not stay in one place; his night and day is spent in travelling towards his homeland”
Qualities of a stranger
His main concern will be on focusing his efforts in getting to his homeland, Jannah
Is not content with residency in this life because it is not his home. This doesn’t mean he should be sad, but a believer’s apparent sadness (due to hereafter matters) is in fact his happiness. We are content with the decree of Allah, but are not content with staying in this dunya

A SCARY STORY ABOUT WOMEN'S FITNA (TEMPTATION) One of the fitnahs (temptations) with which we are tested is the fitnah of women, as the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “I have not left behind me any fitnah (temptation) more harmful to men than women.” There follow some of the methods by which we can avoid this temptation. We ask Allaah to set the affairs of the Muslims straight.
1 – Faith in Allaah.
Faith in Allaah and fear of Allaah provide a safety valve and protect a person against committing haraam actions and following his own whims and desires.
If the believer becomes aware that Allaah is always watching and if he ponders the meanings of His names and attributes, such as the All-Knowing, the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing, the Watchful, the Reckoner, the Preserver, the All-Encompassing, that will generate fear of Him in secret and in public, and will put a stop to disobedience towards Allaah, and will reduce the strength of desire that leads many people to commit haraam actions.
2 – Lowering the gaze and avoiding looking at haraam things
The gaze can generate bad thoughts in the heart, which then lead to ideas and then to desires, then to will and resolve, and then inevitably to doing haraam things. Think about the meaning of this verse which makes a connection between the first steps towards haraam and the end result. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):
“Tell the believing men to lower their gaze (from looking at forbidden things), and protect their private parts (from illegal sexual acts). That is purer for them. Verily, Allaah is All-Aware of what they do”
[al-Noor 24:30]
Ibn Katheer said: “This is a command from Allaah to His believing slaves, to lower their gaze and avoid looking at that which is forbidden to them so that they only look at that which they are permitted to look at. If it so happens that a person’s gaze accidentally falls upon something haraam, he should turn his gaze away from it quickly.
3 – Warding off evil thoughts
Bad thoughts pose a danger to the heart… If a person dwells on them and does not push them away, they will develop into an idea, then into will and resolve, then this will inevitably lead to haraam actions. Beware of dwelling on passing thoughts; rather what you must do is to ward them off and crowd them out with good thoughts.
The treatment, then, is to ward off these passing thoughts and keep yourself busy with beneficial thoughts.
4 – Marriage
It was narrated that ‘Abd-Allaah ibn Mas’ood said: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “O young men, whoever among you can afford it, let him get married, and whoever cannot, let him fast, for it will be a shield for him.” Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 5065.

Abu Dharr reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
قال الله تبارك وتعالى يَا عِبَادِي إِنِّي حَرَّمْتُ الظُّلْمَ عَلَى نَفْسِي وَجَعَلْتُهُ بَيْنَكُمْ مُحَرَّمًا فَلَا تَظَالَمُوا
Allah Almighty said: O My servants, I have forbidden injustice for Myself and I have forbidden it among you, so do not oppress one another.
Jabir ibn Abdullah reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
اتَّقُوا الظُّلْمَ فَإِنَّ الظُّلْمَ ظُلُمَاتٌ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ وَاتَّقُوا الشُّحَّ فَإِنَّ الشُّحَّ أَهْلَكَ مَنْ كَانَ قَبْلَكُمْ حَمَلَهُمْ عَلَى أَنْ سَفَكُوا دِمَاءَهُمْ وَاسْتَحَلُّوا مَحَارِمَهُمْ
Beware of committing oppression, for oppression will be darkness on the Day of Resurrection. Beware of greed, for greed ruined those before you. It caused them to shed their blood and to make lawful what was unlawful to them.

The Messenger ﷺ said, Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, then let him be generous to his guest, and whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him unite the bond of kinship, and whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him say that which is good or observe silence. (Bukhâri)
Ramadan is the month of righteousness and the month of sympathy and mercy, thus by default it is the month of maintaining ties of kinship. During this month hearts are softened by remembering Allah The Almighty and souls respond to the one who calls towards Him. The outcome of this is nothing but good deeds and drawing nearer to the Lord of the heavens and the earth.
Many Sharee‘ah (Islamic legislation) texts emphasize the great value of maintaining ties of kinship and its virtues, along with warning against severing them. Allah The Almighty Says (what means):
· {And fear Allah, through whom you ask one another, and the wombs.} [Quran 4:1].
· {So would you perhaps, if you turned away, cause corruption on earth and sever your [ties of] relationship? Those [who do so] are the ones that Allah has cursed, so He deafened them and blinded their vision} [Quran 47:22-23].
In addition, the Prophet, sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allah exalt his mention ) said: "The severer would not enter Paradise." [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]Sufyaan may Allah have mercy upon him explained it in his narration as "the one who severs the tie of kinship". The Prophet, sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allah exalt his mention ), also said: "He who likes that his sustenance should be expanded and his age lengthened should join the ties of kinship." [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

Whatsoever is on it (the earth) will perish. And the Face of your Lord full of Majesty and Honour will remain forever” [al-Rahmaan 55:26-27]
“Every soul shall taste death in the end; to Us shall you be brought back.” (Surat al-‘Ankabut: 57)
everyone who has ever appeared on this earth was destined to die. Without exception they all died, every one. Today, we hardly come across the traces of many of these people who passed away. Those currently living and those who will ever live will also face death on a predestined day. Despite this fact, people tend to see death as an
unlikely incident.
Think of a baby who has just opened its eyes to the world and a man who is about to breathe his last. Both had no influence on their individual birth or death whatsoever. Only God possesses the power to inspire the breath of life or to take it away.
All human beings will live until a certain day and then die; God in the Qur’an gives an account of the attitude commonly shown towards death in the following verse:
Say: “The death from which you flee will truly overtake you: then you will be sent back to the Knower of things secret and open: and He will tell you (the truth of) the things that you did!” (Surat al- Jumu’ah: 8)
The majority of people avoid thinking about death. In the rapid flow of daily events, a person usually occupies himself with totally different subjects: what college to enroll in, which company to work for, what color of clothing to wear next morning, what to cook for supper; these are the kinds of major issues that we usually consider. Life is perceived as a routine process of such minor matters. Attempts to talk about death are always interrupted by those who do
not feel comfortable hearing about it. Assuming death will come only when one grows older, one does not want to concern himself with such an unpleasant subject. Yet it should be kept in mind that living for even one further hour is never guaranteed. Everyday, man witnesses the deaths of people around him but thinks little about the day when others will witness his own death. He never supposes that such an end is awaiting him!
Nevertheless, when death comes to man, all the “realities” of life suddenly vanish. No reminder of the “good old days” endures in this world. Think of everything that you are able to do right now: you can blink your eyes, move your body, speak, laugh; all these are functions of your body. Now think about the state and shape your body will assume after your death.

Awkward silence…
I have came across situations as such a number of times. It is commonplace to meet a schoolgirl or a mature mother wearing hijab only in Ramadan. It’s also ordinary to meet a Muslim man/woman who prays the five prayers in the mosque, recites the holy Quran and engages in charity activities only in Ramadan.
Mainstream Muslims do much good deeds, way more than usual, in Ramadan, and stop it once it ends. For example, here in Egypt, every Ramadan, hundreds of thousands of so-called “Ramadan packages” full of food are delivered to the needy in their poor marginalized areas. I heard many people calling for preparing such packages throughout the year, as the needy are always in need for such help, not only one month per year.
Seasonal worship
Every year, few weeks before the holy month starts, Muslims raise the yearly question, “what is your plan for Ramadan? How will you increase your worship?” And Muslims keep planning with very high goals, in attempt to beat the last year’s record.
Every Ramadan there is always a peer pressure to be a better person; to pray more, to recite Quran, not to back-bite, not to swear, not to wear too much make-up,…etc
Of course, we know that the ninth month in the Islamic calendar is a special one when Allah very generously multiplies our good deeds. However, Some Muslims deal with this fact like they do in a shopping festival with very luring sales.
They try to compile as much good deeds as they afford during Ramadan, while knowing for sure that they will not sustain after Ramadan, because it is unaffordable to do that much of worships, and also because after Ramadan, the good deeds are treated ordinarily.
We have to utilize this benign peer pressure to have a new start with our God almighty. However, temporarily adopting a religious lifestyle and planning to end it all as soon as Ramadan ends, means that we do not take our relation with Allah seriously. Not to mention that it gives a bad image of us before the non-Muslims.
This case of seasonal worshipping also happens in the first 9 day of Zul-hijja, in travelling on umrahs, as well as when some students pray only during their exams.
My Sheikh’s advice
When the students asked for his advice on Ramadan plans, my sheikh reminded us with the prophet Mohammad (pbuh) hadith,
“The most beloved deeds to Allah’s the most regular and constant even though they were little” (Narrated by Al Bukhari).

Unfortunately, the Ummah today is passing through a bitter state of division, discord and weakness, incurring regress and humiliation, so much so that the heart of any Muslim is painfully affected. But this should not cause us to forget Allah’s firm promise that victory and success on the earth will certainly be granted to His worshippers.
Consider how this great religion brought many different people together: The Prophet Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allah exalt his mention ) was an Arab, Bilal an Abyssinian, Suhayb a Roman and Salman a Persian may Allah be pleased with them. Even today, many people leave the beliefs of their religion, be it idol-worship, Judaism or Christianity, to come to Allah’s religion of Islam.
If Muslims reflect upon this and understand that whatever division faces them, whether of class, race, or partisanship, etc., if they consider the reality of Islam and how it unifies all people, they will overcome all of these causes for weakness. This issue is in itself enough to bring the Ummah back to the great position of glory which it enjoyed during the era of the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allah exalt his mention ). We ask Allah to keep us upon His faith until we die.
Allah Says (what means): {You [yourselves] were like that before; then Allah conferred His favour [i.e., guidance] upon you...} [Quran: 4:94]
This verse was revealed as an address to a group of people who were once idolaters but then embraced Islam. Similarly, many of us may have lived as idolaters in a life-style similar to that of the Jahileeyyah (pre-Islamic period of ignorance) before Allah conferred His great favour upon us, showing us the truth and allowing us to leave disbelief and come to the light of the true faith. Almighty Allah saved us by making us hate the disbelief and disobedience that we previously adhered to.
Even though we are a weakened nation, Allah has conferred a great favour upon us; our existence instils tremendous fear in the hearts of the disbelievers. They spend their nights unable to rest simply because of the great fear that they have of the Muslims, despite our weakness. This is not because they are unaware of the religion of Islam, certainly not, because as Allah Says (what means): {And they rejected them [i.e., Allah's signs], while their [inner] selves were convinced thereof...} [Quran: 27:14]
And also what means: {Those to whom We gave the Scripture know him as they know their own sons. But indeed, a party of them conceals the truth while they know [it].} [Quran: 2:1
