The Indian Administrative Service (IAS) is the administrative arm of All India Services. Considered India's largest civil service, the IAS, along with the Indian Police Service and the Indian Forest Service, is one of three divisions of All India Services. Members of those three services serve both the Indian Government and the individual states. In addition, IAS officers can be assigned to different public sector undertakings. Unlike most countries that follow the Westminster parliamentary government structure, the IAS is part of the nation 's permanent bureaucracy and an inseparable part of India 's government executive. As such, the state remains politically neutral, which provides the ruling party or alliance with administrative continuity. A probationary term as a sub-divisional magistrate is fulfilled by an IAS officer after acceptance of service. Completing this probation is followed by an executive administrative position as a district magistrate and collector in a district that lasts for many years. After this tenure an officer may be promoted as a divisional commissioner to head an entire administrative division of the state. The Indian Police Service (IPS) is one of three All India Services provided for in India's constitution. In 1948 it replaced the Indian Colonial Police, a year after India became independent from the UK.
