Every year, more than 700 films are released in Hollywood, so movies have to work harder and harder to make the same impact. Sure, not all of the following movies are spectacular but each of them has done their part to earn a spot in the annals of Hollywood history.
1. PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES (2011)
You forgot about this Johnny Depp misfire from a few years back, didn’t you? Well, history hasn’t forgotten, because On Stranger Tides holds the record for the most expensive film ever made. With a production budget of $378.5 million, What’s worse, that record is actually in question, because Avatar has an unconfirmed budget of $425 million.
2. THE WOLF OF WALL STREET (2013)
When it premiered in 2013, it broke the Hollywood record for uses of the “f” word (about 506 times, nearly three times a minute). Removing the curse words caused the edited version released in the UAE to drop 45 minutes in film time. Now, there is a movie with more overall curse words, but it was called Swearnet, so that feels like an immediate disqualification, right?

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island is a 2012 American science fantasy action-adventure film, sequel to the 2008 movie Journey to the Center of the Earth, and (like its predecessor) based on the Jules Verne novel of the same name.

Although the novel states that the creatures on the island were unusually large, the incorporation of gigantic creatures originated from Ray Harryhausen's 1961 version of the film.
MPC had an in-house iguana they studied for textures and movement. It was clear that the musculature they needed to support this 15-tonne lizard would have to be quite large so they started with the muscles and then figured out the flexing and the skin on top of that.
The film features several scenes where digi-doubles were necessary to complete dynamic shots.
Lightstage LLC recorded the actors’ facial expressions at the level of pore detail, all facial and full body data, lighting, and textures were captured in just a few hours.
For the sequence where the heroes are riding giant bees being chased by birds, Rising Sun Pictures augmented aerial footage from the location shoot in Kauai with a 3-D virtual jungle they created.
For the Bees, On location, the production team shot background ground and aerial plates based on The Third Floor’s previs.
A later shoot in North Carolina incorporated the actors on Bee Bucks shot against a greenscreen.
Even though principal photography was mainly shot in Hawaii.
Due to the way the actors had to interact with these enormous creatures and how the creatures themselves had to interact with the environment around them, a lot of the jungle foliage had to be digitally replaced or augmented.
Journey 2 is a kids’ movie so the studio wanted to follow its predecessor, Journey To The Center Of The Earth, and make it a 3-D movie.
However, shooting in stereo meant the entire film and its sequences had to be conceived that way.
One interesting thing they found out was that you need a minimum of 15 frames for your brain to understand a 3D image and more like 18 frames in order to properly register it.
To accommodate this, the edits and camera moves were slowed down and the depth of the 3D image was flattened out in some sequences to make it a little easier for the brain to read.

Independence Day: Resurgence, is a sequel that was made and is set, 20 years after the events of the previous 1996 film, Independence day. Ironically enough, the film, with the slogan "We had twenty years to prepare, so did they" seems somewhat underprepared. It received poor reviews and didn't do very well at the box office.

Originally it was planned to make two sequels with Will Smith returning as Steven Hiller but Fox was having trouble negotiating his salary for the two films and so two scripts were written, one with, and one without Will Smith. Eventually, Smith was deemed "too expensive" and so they used the one without. When watching the film you can't help but get the feeling that the cast was chosen to try to please everyone, to "cover all the bases" and this makes it very hard to feel empathy towards the characters, on the plus side, thanks to the incredible VFX work, you do feel that there is actually an imminent danger and that the alien threat is very real, even if you don't really care whether they survive it or not.
The Aliens.
Director Roland Emmerich wanted the aliens to have the same iconic look and feel as the aliens from the 1996 film because he felt it would bridge the 20-year time gap and add believability to the creatures, so the VFX team worked on 2 different types of aliens, the colonists, and the soldiers, both were based on the practical puppets made for the 1996 film, but in this film, they would be fully CG. Perhaps the most challenging part of the aliens were the tentacles that whip out from their backs.
The Alien Queen.
Weta Digital was given the task of creating the Alien Queen, building Area 51, and supplying all the shots involving the two.
The Alien queen appears in two different ways in the film, firstly within the mothership where she's a huge 140ft tall [42.5m], 4 limbed character, and later when she's an even bigger 220ft tall [67m] character after she gets inside her biomechanical exo-suit and heads out to battle.
The Mothership.
Scanline VFX was given the task (among others) of designing and building the mothership and supplying all the shots pertaining to it, just to be clear, the mothership is absolutely humongous! approximately 2796 miles in diameter [4500km] and another 1242 miles [2000km] when its legs are fully extended. Working from a previs model from Uncharted Territory, they found that since the design was somewhat symmetrical, they could cut the mothership into pie sections and work on them individually. While working closely with the director and production VFX supervisor, and using concept artwork and photograph

Despite being a commercial flop, 2019’s gritty Hellboy reboot is full of impressive VFX work.
Goodbye Kansas studios has done VFX work for films like Kung Fury and Let the Right One In. For Hellboy, they rendered scenes of demonic destruction in London.
They combined creature effects with real London environments, changing the lighting to set a grim tone.
This bridge scene layered 3D models, smoke effects, and creature animation to achieve its effect.
During some of the goriest scenes, actors were replaced by digital models just as they were supposed to be attacked.
Sometimes, only one body part was replaced, leaving the rest of an actor’s body in place underneath.
Rise has experience working in superhero media, having done VFX for Shazam and Captain Marvel. They handled some of the creature animation and environments for Hellboy.
They faced the challenge of combining human features with grotesque bodies such that they looked like a single being.
Similar work was done with Nimue’s head, to make sure it didn’t look out of place as it flew.
A partially digital set allowed for environments to be destroyed with ease.
Worldwide is a VFX studio based in Bulgaria, where parts of Hellboy were filmed. They worked on over 900 shots for the film, as well as helping with concept art and storyboarding.
They added water effects for the seaside sequences…
...and cloud effects during the storm. Real buildings were copied digitally to help configure atmospheric perspective.
It was their flame effects that gave Hellboy’s sword and crown their hellish appearance.
Entire environments were modelled digitally, helping the creatures and other effects look at home in them, without keeping the actors from doing their jobs.
