Rooting Hormone vs. Homemade DIY Alternatives
Is rooting hormone worth using? Is there a good natural alternative to rooting powder (or liquid or gel)? These are common questions - and I wish I had a more popular answer! When it comes to cinnamon, aloe vera, and honey, these DIY homemade solutions just don't stack up against the impressive track-record of IBA-based formulations in the science and profession of growing plants. Willow water is an interesting alternative, and I'll explore its usefulness here as well.
I suspect I'll get a bit of heat for these conclusions. Let me disclaim a couple of things here: 1) if you've seen evidence of an effective alternative, go ahead and share it in the comments. I'm always happy to learn something new 2) When I say that "It's worth it" to use commercial rooting hormone, I leave it to your research and experience in applying it to any specific plant. For some easy-to-root varieties, it might never make sense to use hormone (or any of the alternatives). Successful rates will vary by plant and stage of growth. 3) I don't have a stake in whether you use one particular brand or another, or if you use IBA formulations at all. Do what you like. I'm just sharing my understanding and experience from one gardener to another.

When planning crops for your own plant business or backyard nursery, it's tempting to think of plants you propagate yourself as "free". Long-term, this can lead to poor decision making - holding onto carryover plants for too long, over-propagating easy plants, and missing opportunities on plants that may have higher upfront costs, but outperform your "free plants" in other ways. Consider your own time (maybe your most limited resource), space, ongoing watering, soil, plastic, fertilizer and other inputs. In the long run, these can outweigh direct financial costs. I suggest that you choose plants according to local market demand/price rather than initial cost.

One of my roses surprised me by developing these prominent winged thorns. This is rosa hugonis - and I thought maybe it was mixed up because these bright red stems didn't look like the normal growth. Then I saw this thread: https://www.houzz.com/discussions/2133848/neat-thorns-foliage-rosa-hugonis-or and it looks like the rose in question also had the exaggerated thorns and was ID'd as R. hugonis. In any case, I love these kinds of interesting ornamental features on roses. So much more to enjoy than just the flowers.

What do you do when you receive your bare-root roses in the fall... do you plant them in the garden right away, or do you pot them up? In my case, I overwinter them in pots in my greenhouse, which also gives them a good head start in the spring.

If you're comparing the advantages of grafted roses vs. own root (in theory, say) here's a reality check: you don't get to decide what's available! Many (especially larger) producers still primarily grow grafted roses, so if you want the rose of your dreams - you may need to be flexible on grafted roses and even the rootstock used by the supplier. Speaking of rootstock, there are 3 main commercial rootstocks ('Dr. Huey', R. Multiflora & R. x 'Fortuniana') you may want to be familiar with. Truth be told, there have been plenty of different rootstock varieties used over the years, and some growers are still likely testing new varieties. In this video, I'll go through some of the basics of why you'd consider choosing a grafted rose for your garden.

This is how to prepare Bordeaux mixture at the rate recommended for overwinter (dormant) spraying as a plant disease preventive. If you spray thoroughly on dormant plant, the spray will help to reduce overwintering spores (downy & powdery mildew of grapes, apple scab, etc on orchard crops). I'll use the formula today to reduce blackspot on my dormant roses.
Bordeaux mixture preparation:
For each gallon of water, separately dissolve 6.5 tsp of Copper (II) sulfate and 3 tbsp of Hydrated lime. Stir well, and let sit for 15 minutes. Strain the 2 resulting solutions together into your spray tank.

I'll show you this cool root vegetable, Chinese Artichoke or Crosne. To skip right to the plant, go to around 2:50. Prior to that, it's a whirlwind tour of my greenhouse at the beginning of spring. Chinese Artichoke (Stachys affinis in the latin) is not so common as other root vegetables. It's from the mint family, and like many relatives, it spreads pretty vigorously in the garden. The edible part is the rhizome (I think I said tuber in the video - bad horticulturist!) which is kinda funny looking, white and bumpy. It's crisp and fresh tasting, reminding me of bean sprouts. It's an attractive plant, with textured foliage and even has some nice tall purple flower spikes.
