Music History 101 - Ancient Greece
Modern Western society has its foundations in the classic Greek culture, but not just in political and social aspects, but also in architecture, aesthetics and of course... music.
In the ancient Greece the music wasn’t just the art of sound, but everything that was under the protection of the 9 muses , the daughters of Zeus and Mnemosyne.
Thats were the word “music” comes from: Muse.
They were the ones who inspired all creative work by mankind.
You can find evidence of this in the illiad and odyssey of the greek poet Homer. Music as a powerful tool to change the mood of a man, just as Ulises on his return from the Trojan war, when he encountered an island inhabited by singing mermaids who made all sailors crashed their ships on the rocks trying to get closer to them. Another important character in Greek mythology is Orfeo, he tamed all beasts, moved stones and plants with his singing and his lire.
This virtue of music changing the mood of the listener is called “Ethos”.
Of all musical cultures of the ancient world, the greeks are the most studied.
We can find tons of sources from greek music in hieroglyphics deciphered in the early 19th century and cuneiform after that.
There are many references that indicate that music was an integral part of the Greek perception of how their race had even come into existence and how their destinies continued to be watched over and controlled by the Gods. It is no wonder, then, that music was omnipresent at the Pythian Games, the Olympic Games, religious ceremonies, leisure activities, and even the beginnings of drama as an outgrowth of the dithyrambs performed in honor of Dionysus.
It may be that the actual sounds of the music heard at rituals, games, dramas, etc. underwent a change after the fall of Athens in 404 B.C. in the first Peloponnesian War.
There are significant fragments of actual Greek musical notation.
Less than 20 fragments of greek written music have survived till this days in stone and papiro, and none of them were written before the 2nd century b.C.
Some of this pieces of written music are:
The first Delfic Hymn, a pean to Apolo was discovered in Delfos, the second Delfic Hymn was written by Limenio of Athens. and the Epitaph of Seikilos to his wife comes from a tomb in Aidin, Turkey.
Pythagoras, considered that the basis of musical tuning was the relative sizes of the planets. This was called the harmony of the spheres.
This consisted in stretching a single string in the proportions 4:1, 3:1, 3:2 etc- this means if a string is divided in a half you will get an octave higher from the fundamental tone. 4:1 two octaves, an octave plus a fifth 3:1 and fifth and fourth 3:2, 4: 3 respectively.
Although this theory was dismissed by the the Copernican Revolution of the 16th century because of the “pythagorean comma”. All this scholars showed how we humans started to search for a mathematical basis to explain how the universe works. this took precedence over this practical theoretical basis for music.
Understand the mystery of music to explain the mystery of the universe.
To conclude we can say that the legacy of Greece is their written music theory, which have a lot of similarities to the ecclesiastic medieval modes and all of this knowledge was transmitted by the last latin writers as Boecio, Casiodoro and from the arab writers in the 9th century after the arab domination in Spain.
