The Comic Book Industry Is A Victim Of Its Own "Success"
Dav Pilkey and Dog Man are the new faces of comics and maybe understanding why they're successful can help us understand why so many modern western comics aren't. In a way the success of modern (70's-90's) Superheroes may be as much to blame for the destruction of the comic book industry as anything else. It's time to stop romanticizing the comic book industry's recent history. No industry that has been in decline for 30 years and whose last great era of relevance was due to a speculation bubble should be held up as an example, a standard, a blueprint, or a template. It's time to move on.
Defeating arguments in favor of wokeness in the MCU, woke DC comics, and wokeness in society in general isn't easy. Fans of wokeness often ask their critics questions full of unfounded assumptions, and chances are you'll eventually get called a few names. More important than winning debates is understanding woke rebuttals, why wokeness itself is fundamentally wrong.

The DCEU and the Snyderverse are gone leaving 12 films and a divided fandom in their wake, but what went wrong? And will the DCU do any better? If they hope to they'll need to understand what makes DC different from Marvel, the types of stories appropriate for each of them, who Superman and Batman really are and what the Superhero genre, at its best, is all about.
This is a remake of one of my previous videos this time with less rambling, and hopefully hitting at deeper themes, and deeper problems than I did last time.

Spider-man: On More Day should have never happened but it also should never been necessary. Because Peter Parker and Mary Jane should never have been allowed to get married. Marriage isn't the problem, it's the type of character he is and what having characters get married does to their story and to their fictional universes and what establishing "fated relationships" does to the experience fans have.

Marvel, DC Comics, and just about every franchise you enjoy, didn't go woke overnight and they didn't go woke all at once.

Get Woke, Go Broke seems to still be true with Strange World tanking at the box office, and Andor practically begging for viewers, but the Multi-Color Revolution doesn't run on money, it runs on minds, imaginations, captured franchises and industries.

Ant-Man and the Wasp Quantumania might lose Disney money, and Anime and Manga are outselling American comic books but neither of those facts tell us much. We need to go a little deeper.

The American Comic Book Industry as a whole, and comic publishers like DC Comics and Marvel Comics, have been dying since the 1990's when the comic book speculation bubble burst, and modern problems such as piracy, and woke comics, have only made matters worse. But instead of learning from the mistakes of the past the comic book industry doubled down on them and baked those anti-reader business practices into the very fabric of the industry. If American comics are going to win back American readers they're going to have to call into question a business model established in the 1930s, publication practices from the 1990's and even the way we think of superheroes at all.
