Arnold August on the US Canadian Attack on Cuba and Venezuela
Winnipeg, October 3, 2019 -- There is no doubt that Canadian foreign policy has taken a hard turn to the right, especially with regard to Latin America. Arnold August provides the context and details the US led attacks on Cuba and Venezuela that Canada has been supporting so vigorously.
August is a Montreal-born Canadian journalist and lecturer, the author of Democracy in Cuba and the 1997–98 Elections, Cuba and Its Neighbours: Democracy in Motion and Cuba–U.S. Relations: Obama and Beyond.
He was a member of the Canadian Delegation invited to the Sao Paulo Forum in Caracas last July. His articles are published regularly on many web sites in Latin America, Cuba, Europe, North America and the Middle East. He collaborates with television and radio broadcasts based in Cuba, Ecuador, Venezuela, Canada and U.S. He is a member of the Québec Chapter of the Network of Intellectuals, Artists and Social Movements in Defence of Humanity.
He gives conferences in Cuba, Canada, the UK and until recently the U.S., from which he was barred on March 16, 2019 for his political views and specifically his support for the Bolivarian Revolution.
Arnold August's visit to Winnipeg was hosted by the Winnipeg Venezuela Peace Committee.

Winnipeg, May 12, 2019: One century on, the Winnipeg General Strike remains one of the most significant events in Canadian history. A new book, 1919: A Graphic History of the Winnipeg General Strike, marks the centenary of this epic struggle.
1919 was co-created by the Graphic History Collective, a group of activists, artists, writers, and researchers from across Canada, and David Lester, an artist, writer, illustrator, musician and author of the acclaimed graphic novel The Listener.
The book was introduced to a Winnipeg audience by Collective members Julia Smith and Sean Carlton and David Lester.

Winnipeg, Feb. 12, 2016: Robert-Falcon Ouellette, MP for Winnipeg Centre performed a pipe ceremony at the Portage Place Shopping Centre at noon. He did this to show support for the Cree elder Joseph Meconse who had been kicked out of the mall on January 29th.
According to the Winnipeg Free Press " . . . a security guard ordered Meconse to leave the food court for loitering, just as he was about to sit down and eat a plate of spaghetti. Every day, Meconse, a decorated military veteran and Order of Manitoba recipient, holds court at the food court, where he’s treated like indigenous elder of the shopping mall, an aboriginal ambassador to hundreds who know him by face. Dozens chat with him every day.
"So when Meconse was ordered out of the mall, there was a predictable reaction, including a local drumming protest with indigenous supporters on Wednesday evening.
"The week wrapped up with Portage Place issuing an apology and adopting more flexible definition for what constitutes ‘loitering.’
Friday morning Meconse sat down with David Stone, the mall manager for a face-to-face talk and a personal apology."

WINNIPEG, July 11, 2018 - The Canadians Care Coalition in association with Amnesty International, Menno Simons Students Association and the Global College Students Association held a rally entitled "Rally for Refuge: Rescind the safe third country agreement."
The coalition demanded that the Canadian Government rescind the designation of ‘Safe Third Country’ that is applied to the United States because the US is demonstrably unsafe for refugees. (The Safe Third Country Agreement denies refugee claimants access to the Canadian refugee determination system if they have come from the United States to the Canadian border.)
