Paul Polman was, until recently, the chief executive of Unilever. Throughout his ten year tenure at the top of the company, he was widely regarded as one of the most effective champions for sustainable business.
In his podcast interview, we talked widely about his time at Unilever, what he'd learned and what he thinks about the future prospects for a range of different issues.
In this excerpt, we specifically focus on how businesses can do well in more difficult emerging markets, and how doing so benefits the countries and their people.
A major movie about a modern American civil war is coming out Spring next year, and the trailer for it just dropped. It's a topic we've discussed quite a bit on this channel (civil war, not movies) - and there's something about this trailer that suggests this movie COULD become one of those iconic era-defining movies. Or, it could be a disaster. Or it could just be a movie that, in a couple of years' time, no-one will remember. Let's discuss.

In this news round-up of the week for 30th December 2022, as Covid rages across China, some countries bring in restrictions on travellers blaming the fear of new variants. Russian oligarchs continue to die by sudden falling out of hotel windows syndrome. A controversial leading light of the manosphere Andrew Tate picks a fight with Greta Thunberg and ends up sad. And in this week’s short thought, one more thing about those new year resolutions.

Many of the things you most care about depend on certain key elements, the names of which you mostly never heard of. The defence of your country depends on those things as well. Right now, China has control of them, and it has specifically said that it’s planning to use that control against us. We should probably find out what’s going on.

This week was the 75th anniversary of Britain's health service, which people have said to themselves for decades is "the envy of the world". Well, maybe once. But now it costs more money than most, for worse actual health outcomes. What went wrong - and does anyone dare even discuss it in public?

One of the distinctive voices on the climate change debate is that of Bjorn Lomborg. In his latest book, False Alarm, Lomborg repeats what has been his most distinctive argument – that the climate change policies put forward today are incredibly bad value – spending a dollar for just eleven cents of climate benefit. He argues that, although climate change is a problem that should be addressed, the projected economic scenarios show our optimum response does not involve net zero by 2050, but instead a much more measured approach. Is he right? Let’s have a look.
