現在的甲亢手術，術前與術中做好必要的準備工作的話，
已經進步到是相對很安全與常規的簡易手術之一！
當甲狀腺亢進經過藥物控制不良時，某些患者會需要手術介入處理。 而甲亢的腺體組織很容易出血，甲狀腺又是極度的腫大。對我們有經驗的手術醫師雖然不是問題，可是如果可以進一步縮短手術時間(通常這類手術時間約需一個多小時以上)、減少病人的手術出血量與術後傷口內的血腫，可以減少可能的併發症，讓患者迅速復原與恢復正常生活。
目前的臨床醫療外科，近十幾年來最大的進展之一就是能量刀(energy device)、內視鏡與立體定位的大量常規性的運用。
再加上先進的生物科技製造出的止血凝膠、止血棉、止血貼布等等，讓以往極度危險與容易大量出血的某些手術，變成相對極度簡易了。
在甲狀腺手術，多年前我們已經完全使用能量刀(ligasure, harmonic knife, thunderbeat)而不再有使用綁線止血的方式，也多數都會使用術中的聲帶返喉神經探測系統(intra-op nerve monitoring system, IONM)來保護聲帶功能，現在更有各式各樣的安全止血材料可以搭配使用。
對患者是一大福音，對我們手術醫師而言，也更節省時間、更有信心。
