Here we look at what may be the most beautiful GATE exam problem: finding the minimum number of states for a DFA to recognize the regular expression (111 U 11111)*. We solve this in two ways: a "slow" way (involving converting the regex to an NFA, then the NFA to a DFA, then minimize the DFA), and a "fast" way involving looking at the question from a different angle.
