Sonic Digitalized (v0.2.3) │ Sonic Fan Games [VGFox]
Sonic Digitalized, a fan game that I find refreshingly unique. As the name suggests, Sonic is in a digital world this time. Seems to be underrated, I hope this one gets more attention! You can probably tell that I like this one by now... but how is it?
Well, there is one zone so far. But it's a full length zone at that, with 3 acts and an epic fight with Metal Sonic. Dude comes out of nowhere! Additionally, we have a special stage, though it hasn't actually been implemented into the base game. Rather, it is another option in the menu, but it's still more content so I can't complain. Especially when I actually play this special stage, where I realize it's inspired by Sonic Pocket Adventure! That immediately had me sold. I hope to see it return!
In a way, you can tell Sonic Digitalized is in an early state of development. For one, the item shop is present but doesn't seem to function at all (unless I missed something). Also, the visual glitches might bother you too much (though it could just be an anomaly, since they went away later on for me, so that's good at least). Anyway, there are definitely more positives than negatives here. Hopefully we see more from this project - I believe there's a new version coming soon! ^^

Sonic Hoshi is a solid fan game! The zones have a lot of detail and the music is original... and awesome! Though it isn't complete, the effort clearly shows.
There are 2 zones and 4 bosses. That's right, each act has a boss (which is something we don't often see in these fan games). Sonic even has a new move called the Star Dash, where he can dash mid-air in any direction. Useful for exploring!
Overall, this fan game may be short, but you can tell it's been worked on for awhile. So I'd recommend this one. :)
Note: I know I'm late to the party, but I'm still planning on covering all the SAGE 2021 games (or at least as many as I can). Better late than never? Haha.

It's time again for some fan game madness, with the Sonic Amateur Games Expo! This event I've been looking forward to for awhile. Though, I wasn't sure when the trailer for SAGE '21 would be out, so it caught me by surprise haha. But you know I had to share my reaction, seeing all these great games for the first time!
There's so much here to talk about that I'll make a more in-depth video later on, talking about my thoughts on each game, pausing the footage and all that. But for now, this is my initial reaction to the trailer! And I don't usually get hyped, but c'mon... I'm basically a fan game channel and this is SAGE, so of course I'm hyped. xD

I always like to see a fan game inspired by the 8-bit classics. Sonic Gear'D is that and more, taking inspiration from both the 8-bit and 16-bit classics! There's zones from both the 8-bit and 16-bit games, but the overall style is 8-bit, which is unique.
The game doesn't control as well as some fan games, but it's still fun. The last level may trip you up a bit though, as it did with me. At least there's a unique twist at the end, as you have to defeat Mecha Sonic. (Yes, from Sonic 3 & Knuckles. How did he get here?)
So, I think this is a fun 8-bit style fan game! That is, if you can get past the level design and physics, which can make this game a bit challenging.

Mighty and Shadow return in this fairly recent fan game, Sonic Daybreak! This one uses the GMate engine (credit goes to PVic there). There are 5 characters, and a good amount of zones.
Well, it's enjoyable. The level design is alright, and the music and graphics are nice! But I'd say that there's still signs that this one is either early in development, or rushed. For one, the same boss is reused multiple times. Also, I didn't even get to complete the game, as it just kept crashing at the same section. I'm not sure if that's just a problem on my end or a common problem. Either way, there doesn't seem to be a way to pass it, which is a bummer.
So yeah, what can I say? Sonic Daybreak is decent, but obviously could use some more polish. Feel free to let me know if there's a way for me to progress any further. Not bad though, I'll be looking out for the next version. ^^

Open Surge isn't just a game, you can create games with it too!
You can definitely tell this game was inspired by Sonic, and it does the blue blur justice quite well, with a vibrant art-style and responsive controls! As for game creation? Yes, there are other awesome Sonic engines out there. But if you're looking for another way to create fan games, Open Surge seems like a great choice!
I enjoyed this as it's own game, but I'm really looking forward to checking out what the community has made over the years! Seems like there's over a decade's worth of content available on the forum. Epic!

A fan game from some years back that has a 2.5D style! Also, this fan game is based on... Sonic '06. Didn't see that coming, huh? I wonder how this didn't become more well-known though, I haven't seen many fan games like this.
The tutorial is basic, you can skip that if you want... but the visuals in Wave Ocean impressed me! And yes, the gameplay is similar to that of '06, there's even mach speed sections! But you also have a regular boost meter, so it ends up being an interesting combination of gameplay.
This is probably one of the best-looking 2D fan games based on Sonic '06 that I've played. Seems really promising, I wonder what happened to development? I would've liked to see all the other zones from '06 recreated in this 2.5D style! Well, this fan game is short but quite sweet :)

So here's one of the better OC Sonic fan games I've found so far, Sonic the Hedgehog: Dan4ik Project. If you know of any other OC fan games that are better, I'd be glad to check them out too. But this fan game, for what appears to be their first game, is actually a nice one!
Starting Dan4ik Project, we see Danchik and Sonic featured in a cutscene that most Sonic fans will find familiar. The game then gives a detailed tutorial for the newcomers, which is always a thoughtful feature to include, but thankfully it doesn't mess with the pace too much.
Now, as for the actual game: there's some levels and a couple bosses! The environments aren't anything new, but they don't always have to be. And the physics feel fine, but could use some adjustments.
But yeah, despite this fan game having an OC, it turns out that this one is not only playable, but worth coming back to! Though it was a tad bit short, I was expecting it to be even less long, so I'm satisfied. I would recommend checking this one out for a little enjoyable fan game.

A complete fan game inspired by Sonic bootlegs? Welcome to Sonic: Blasting Adventure! And yes, there's a full game here to blast through.
For a game based off bootlegs, this is actually quite a good fan game. You have Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles to choose from. Plays simple, with no extra moves besides the usual. For Sonic, it's an insta-shield and the usual spin dash. Feels nice to play, with an exciting 8-bit style soundtrack and a bunch of unique zones and bosses!
For some reason, I was expecting a short demo (you know, with some improvements to make and features planned but not added yet). But it turns out that Blasting Adventure is a full game, and has much more to offer than I thought. For anyone who enjoys the 8-bit Sonic games, you probably shouldn't miss this one!

Another great remake, but this time made from the ground up, completely in Unity! That's right, no pre-made Sonic frameworks here. This one especially impresses me, as it plays quite close to the original. Can you believe it's not Sonic 1?
There's only Green Hill Zone this time around, and no bosses. So it goes by quite fast, but there's a bunch of bonus settings that'll keep you going for another playthrough, at least. I definitely had a blast seeing what some of the extras were (even found a weird secret in this video, I won't spoil.)
Will all that said, even though this is short and probably discontinued, it's an awesome remake. Open source too! So you can even use this project for your own awesome 2D fan project. To be honest, I'd like to see that, as I haven't seen many fan games made in Unity. Anyway, even if you aren't a developer, I'd definitely recommend this one if you're in the mood for a Sonic 1 fan game! Especially one where you can have a bit more fun with the extra options.
