Dark Christ was the first project I went into after the 'Songs For Charlotte' "era". Era, therea and everywherea. This is from the rough mix CD (the master disc is still missing), of the second album, "Sunset's Blood", made from my 4 and 8-track recordings to audition musicians for the band. Recorded 29 December 1998-06 January 1999. Considering the first Dark Christ album, "Scarred Hearts", was written and recorded 21-24 December 1998, it was a pretty prolific time. And, one assumes, a pretty crappy Christmas. Well, you're only talking 3 weeks since I wrote and recorded "End-Move", so 'jaunty' wasn't going to be making an appearance. In the end, Dark Christ ran to 4 albums'-worth of material. This second one is, perhaps, the first 'true' DC album, as the first one was a somewhat unique hybrid, with some of the songs still reflecting the 'Charlotte' material lyrically. "Sunset's Blood" lyrically and musically targets the direction I wanted to get back to, having done acoustic singer/songwriter for a decade at that point. Even something as face-on ballad-ey as 'Nothing Changes', although the mix does not show it too well, has a thundery piano and 2 electricn vertebrae to it. It's on 'part 1' video of this CD, but, as a hint, if you are auditioning band members, best not to start by playing them the full 12-minute version of 'For Two; For Four' and saying, "....and I'm looking at a 40-minute set of stuff like this." Some of them left skid marks to the door. (Well, that's drummers for you). On a sidebar, as covered in greater detail in the "Songs For Charlotte" lyric book, there is nothing '666'-ey about the name I chose for my prospective band - it was Christmas, I was hearing 'White Christmas' everywhere (no YouTube or streaming in those days), so I changed 'White' to Dark, and lopped a syllable off of 'Christmas'. I used to get a lot of that back then, before I learned to tell people to ... remove themsleves from my presence. "Can you write something for me to put in my boyfriend's birthday card/girlfriend's Xmas card/friend's wedding card." I'd do it and never see these people again, let alone get an invite to the party. Everybody wanted the product, nobody wanted the producer. Not much has changed, actually, except the date on the calendar.
