I had to apply this principle to myself in response to a video I posted, and share how this principle applies not only to leadership, but in everything we do.
Know Yourself - And Seek Self Improvement. This is the first leadership principle first formalized by the Army in Field Manuel 21-10 in the early 1905's. It's a hard lesson sometimes to learn, but it's one that should be at the forefront of our leadership philosophy.
The Marine Corps adopted the leadership principles and it was in 1995 when I learned these principles to become a better leader. The Army dropped the list and utilize a different leadership model; however, they all say the same thing - only differently.
The Leadership Principles are:
- Know yourself and seek self-improvement.
- Be technically and tactically proficient.
- Develop a sense of responsibility among your subordinates.
- Make sound and timely decisions.
- Set an example.
- Know your people and look out for their welfare.
- Keep your people informed.
- Seek responsibility and take responsibility for your actions.
- Ensure assigned tasks are understood, supervised, and accomplished.
- Train your people as a team.
- Employ your team in accordance with its capabilities.
