Today, podcasts are more popular than ever, allowing both the blind and sighted to enjoy content in audio-only form. But RCA had the same idea back in 1970 with the RZC375 Audio Center: a TV without video, allowing you to listen to VHF and UHF television broadcasts, as well as AM and FM radio.

I received two items in large boxes, wrapped and padded with a very large amount of bubble wrap. This both helped ensure their safe arrival, and also gave me a well stocked supply of it to use when selling my own items.

Voice audio quality test of the Aiptek A-HD+ camcorder while in video mode.
You will not see the fully HD image quality because I created this video clip through capture of its composite analog video/audio output. For some reason, if I try to directly upload to YouTube the H.264 video files that the Aiptek stores on its flash memory drive when recording, YouTube does not show the correct aspect ratio and does not make the video available in "High Quality" resolution.

The GN Netcom Voice Array Microphone, model VA-2000. It uses eight directional microphone elements, with digital signal processing to reduce background noise. It is very sensitive, but unfortunately is also very hissy and low-fidelity, and the output is only monaural. I think the little $10 GE microphone does a better job, despite being only a single omni-directional element.

In the mid-'80s, someone at Brother came up with the idea of making a battery-powered laptop typewriter. The resulting product is small, sleek, lightweight, and easy to use -- but was quickly rendered obsolete by the emergence of laptop computers and telecommunications in the late '80s.
The print quality is fairly good, but the thermal ribbons don't last long (about 32 pages, Brother claimed) and are expensive. Or you can take out the ribbon and print directly onto thermal fax paper. Some portable computer printers were made using the same mechanism. The printing is slow, but an LCD and memory buffer allows you to keep typing while the printing catches up.

Wal-Mart's Onn brand "rabbit ears" antenna and add-on antenna amplifier are a cheap but effective way to improve your FM radio reception. Similar brands should work fine as well -- just avoid those useless "mudflap" antennas. They barely work for TV and don't work at all for radio.

Radio Shack sold these components for many years -- for over two decades, in the case of the amplifier -- and for good reason: they were very small and provided excellent performance for their size and price. Here is the Realistic SCT-86 cassette deck, Realistic TM-150 AM mono/FM stereo tuner, and Realistic SA-150 stereo integrated amplifier. I demonstrate the system using both "RCA" (rebranded Optimus) 2-way bookshelf speakers, and smaller Realistic Minimus-2.5 speakers.
