# ***The Charlatans Biography***
***"The Charlatans"*** are an English rock band formed in the **[West Midlands](https://cutt.ly/NIvCiHx)** in 1988 by bassist ***[Martin Blunt](https://cutt.ly/9IvCmt0)***, who recruited fellow West Midlanders ***[Rob Collins](https://cutt.ly/NIvCItb)*** (keyboards), ***[Jon Brookes](https://cutt.ly/wIvCJVe)*** (drums), Jon Day (guitar) and singer-guitarist ***Baz Ketley***. ***Ketley*** left the band and was replaced by singer ***[Tim Burgess](https://cutt.ly/pIvX8R9)***.
Although the ***Charlatans*** would later become popularly associated with the *[Madchester scene](https://cutt.ly/YIb7ZuY)*, the band's early demos recorded in 1988 in *Birmingham* and *Dudley* already evidenced the sound that the band ultimately became famous for, dominated by ***Collins*** *Hammond organ*.
With their fusion of 1960s *soul*, *R&B* and *garage rock*, the band saw themselves firmly in the West Midlands tradition that included Birmingham bands ***[The Spencer Davis Group](https://cutt.ly/EIvVvS7)*** and early ***[Dexys Midnight Runners](https://cutt.ly/UIvVQUl)***.
> On previous ***[“Wonderland”](https://cutt.ly/aIv2Vs6)***, the band sounded like it still wanted to change the world (o, at the very least, the world's dancefloors), but on eighth studio album ***“Up at the Lake”***, ***The Charlatans*** sounds like its title suggests: a retreat and a retrenchment.
> There's a defined sense that this is the beginning of a new chapter for the band, and that ***“Up at the Lake”*** is their first work as "mature" artists. What makes sense, since the *britpop* torch had been passed on from the ***Charlies*** and their peers to the next generation (***[The Futureheads](https://cutt.ly/wIbM6HI)***, ***[Dogs Die in Hot Cars](https://cutt.ly/TIb1EiR)***, ***[The Coral](https://cutt.ly/BIb1Dlt)***, ***[Franz Ferdinand](https://cutt.ly/aIb1LIi)***, etc.) by 2004.
>
> What's here instead is the boozy barroom shuffle of ***["Bona Fide Treasure"](https://cutt.ly/WIbtS0b)*** British trad rock in the title track, and just a touch of the band's post-Madchester tendencies on ***["Feel the Pressure"](https://cutt.ly/WIbtS0b)***.
> ***[“Up at the Lake”](https://cutt.ly/rIv27Qc)*** is a relaxed and assured record, the work of craftsmen who know how to produce something solid and consistent. As such, there isn't much of a spark, but anyone who's bothered to follow the ***Charlatans*** this long, won't be disappointed.

# ***Sonic Youth Biography***
***Sonic Youth*** was an American rock band based in *New York City*, formed in 1981.
Founding members ***[Thurston Moore](https://cutt.ly/AOmudDl)*** (guitar, vocals), ***[Kim Gordon](https://cutt.ly/LOmujx4)*** (bass, vocals, guitar) and ***[Lee Ranaldo](https://cutt.ly/GOmuz5Y)*** (guitar, vocals) remained together for the entire history of the band, while ***[Steve Shelley](https://cutt.ly/OOmubhc)*** (drums) followed a series of short-term drummers in 1985, rounding out the core line-up.
***[Jim O'Rourke](https://cutt.ly/eOmuRjF)*** (bass, keyboards, guitar) was also a member of the band from 1999 to 2005, and ***[Mark Ibold](https://cutt.ly/bOmuPsq)*** (guitar, bass) was a member from 2006 to 2011.
***Sonic Youth*** emerged from the experimental *no wave* art and music scene in New York before evolving into a more conventional rock band.
Their inventive use of alternate tunings, dissonance, and feedback, which they combined with the intensity of *hardcore punk* and the performance art aesthetic of New York's *avant-garde*, created a new sonic landscape with an impact that lasted for decades.
> In the mid-'80s, the members of ***Sonic Youth*** made no secret of their fascination with ***Madonna***. They were known to discuss her life and career in interviews, and the album ***“EVOL”*** listed ***"Madonna, Sean, and Me"*** as an alternate title for the closing tune ***"Expressway to Yr. Skull"***.
>
> At the peak of their ***Madonna*** frenzy, the band start a collaboration with ***[Mike Watt](https://cutt.ly/vOSxbL6)*** and decided to record a tribute single to the ***“Material Girl”***; on the A-side, ***Sonic Youth*** performed a dark, ominous version of ***"Into the Groove"*** (dubbed ***"Into the Groovey"***) that sounds slow, until samples from ***Madonna's*** original recording confirm it's being played at the same tempo as the upbeat original.
>
> The album also included both ***Sonic Youth*** songs from the single plus a demo version of ***"Burnin' Up"***, and a cover of ***[Robert Palmer's](https://cutt.ly/0OSxNws)*** ***"Addicted to Love"*** which was recorded in a karaoke booth.

***Steven Patrick Morrissey***, known by his surname, is an English singer, songwriter, and author. He came to prominence as the frontman of rock band the ***"[Smiths](https://cutt.ly/vvmCtDB)"*** who were active from 1982 to 1987. Since then, he has pursued a successful solo career.
Morrissey's music is characterised by his baritone voice and distinctive lyrics with recurring themes of emotional isolation, sexual longing, self-deprecating and dark humour, and anti-establishment stances.
***"Southpaw Grammar"*** is the Morrissey's fifth studio album, released on 28 August 1995 by record labels **RCA** in the UK and **Reprise** in the US.
If ***"Vauxhall and I"*** represented a more mature Morrissey, ***"Southpaw Grammar"*** superficially presents a more rough and tumble version of the singer.
The music appropriately reflects this, with growling, distorted guitars and martial rhythms. ***"Southpaw Grammar"*** doesn't rock as hard or with as much style as the rockabilly-inflected ***”Your Arsenal”*** - instead, it's his art rock album, complete with strings, drum solos, and two ten-minute songs.
However, there is no cohesive glue to the record. ***"The Teachers"*** uses its 11 minutes effectively, but ***"Southpaw"*** is merely ponderous. ****"Reader Meet Author"*** and ***"Dangenham Dave"*** are classic three-minute pop songs, but ***"Do Your Best and Don't Worry"*** is strictly by the books.
Nevertheless, there is plenty of enjoyable music on the record, even if the concept is flawed.
***”The Boy Racer”*** is the first song on Morrissey’s fifth studio album ***”[Southpaw Grammar](https://cutt.ly/ebuvE53)”***.

Copping their name from ***[William S. Burroughs](https://cutt.ly/knKjvcv)*** euphemism for ejaculation, ***"Thin White Rope"*** was founded in Davis, California in 1984. Although the time and place of their formation aligned them with both the Paisley Underground and roots rock movements, the group quickly staked out its own musical territory, divining their own unique brand of dark, surreal, desert rock.
***"Thin White Rope"*** was led by singer/guitarist ***[Guy Kyser](https://cutt.ly/UnHksbT)***, whose harsh, tightly coiled vocals and unsettling lyrics combined to give the band its edge; in the group's first incarnation, Kyser was joined by guitarist ***[Roger Kunkel](https://cutt.ly/ynHkhgk)***, bassist ***Kevin Staydohar*** (soon replaced by ***Steven Tesluk***), and drummer ***Jozef Becker***.
***"In The Spanish Cave"*** (also known as ***"Captain Long Brown Finger In The Spanish Cave"***) is the band's third full-length album, released in 1988. under the ***"Demon Records"***.
Years before bands like ***"[Grant Lee Buffalo](https://cutt.ly/Rmqbaog)"*** and ***"[16 Horsepower](https://cutt.ly/pmqbgSK)"*** were doing their brand of ghost town music, ***TWR*** were doing similar stuff drawing from the ***"[The Velvet Underground](https://cutt.ly/Umqbzrl)"*** and ***"[Television](https://cutt.ly/4mqbb0I)"*** with a bit of ***"[Lee Hazlewood](https://cutt.ly/zmqbW19)"*** thrown in.
Singer/guitarist ***Guy Kyser*** sounds like he eats cigarettes and drinks like a fish with a growl that is not radio friendly and not easy to get into at first.
Compared to the first two this one is more open, less claustrophobic and even their wicked sense of humour gets more space to breathe here. But yes, this is more rootsy americana than chilling psychedelia, something perfectly embodied by the rolling, countryesque opener ***"Mr Limpet"***...
***”It's Ok”*** is the third song on ***”Thin White Rope”*** third album, ***"[In The Spanish Cave](https://cutt.ly/5murxJY)"***, released in 1988. under the ***"Demon Records"***.

**"Vivian Girls"*** are an American band from Brooklyn, New York. started in March 2007 as the trio of ***[Cassie Ramone (Grzymkowski)](https://cutt.ly/vnzc08H)*** (guitar/vocals), ***[Katy "Kickball Katy" Goodman](https://cutt.ly/Mnzc8zT)*** (bass/drums/vocals), and ***[Frankie Rose](https://cutt.ly/ynzve2r)*** (drums/bass/vocals).
Band named after the magnum opus of outsider author artist ***[Henry Darger](https://cutt.ly/bnzvoan)*** (titled *"The Story of the Vivian Girls, in What is Known as the Realms of the Unreal, of the Glandeco-Angelinian War Storm, Caused by the Child Slave Rebellion"*).
The band paired girl group melancholy with punk nihilism in reverb-heavy songs that recalled the raw, grainy beauty of lesser-known '90s independents like ***”[Black Tambourine](https://cutt.ly/pnzvsLY)”***, ***”[Talulah Gosh](https://cutt.ly/AnzvhqF)”***, and ***”[Tiger Trap](https://cutt.ly/qnzvzkr)”***.
In their initial seven-year run, the band toured the world and released new music constantly, the economic hooks and fuzzy urgency of their 2008 self-titled debut album becoming influential in their own right.
While only a band for a short while, they recorded a demo which included five original songs and a ***”Wipers”*** cover, and began to play locally in Brooklyn and Katy and Cassie's home state of New Jersey.
Within the first couple of months they had already developed a strong local following, supporting acts like ***”Jay Reatard”***, ***”[Sonic Youth](https://cutt.ly/xnzm13C)”*** and the ***”King Khan & BBQ Show”*** as well as finding kindred spirits in other locals like ***”Cause Co-Motion!”***, ***”Crystal Stilts”***, and ***”[Woods](https://cutt.ly/Lnzm3Yj)”***, with whom they’ve shared many bills and helped develop a local scene.
On fourth studio album, ***”Memory”*** the three bandmembers apply the musical growth they experienced in other projects - ***Cassie Ramone*** in the ***"[Babies](https://cutt.ly/HnxqeKO)"***, ***Katy Goodman*** in ***"[La Sera](https://cutt.ly/VnxqyJi)"***, and ***Ali Koehler*** in ***"Upset"***.
Like a decade before, they deliver plenty of songs that add the noise of punk to the sweetness of pop, sounding tough and more focused than ever. But, the band doesn't fall into the nostalgia trap; they've taken the things that made them good and refined them to a sharp point.
***I'm Far Away”*** is the ninth song on band’s fourth studio album ***"[Memory](https://cutt.ly/Onxocds)"***,, released on September 20, 2019 by ***[Polyvinyl Record Co.](https://cutt.ly/hnz5jzo)***, and is the band's first album since their split in 2014 and subsequent reformation.

> The band’s fifth studio album, ***“Tellin' Stories”*** should have been triumphant, but tragedy struck midway through its recording, when keyboardist ***Rob Collins*** was killed in a car accident. He was an integral part of the band's lineup, creating a distinctive, swirling, neo-psychedelic sound, so ***[Primal Scream's Martin Duffy](https://cutt.ly/uIbS6EZ)*** volunteered to help the band complete the album, which was basically written before ***Collins'*** death.
> That might explain why there are no overt references to his absence anywhere on the album.
> Instead, ***“Tellin' Stories”*** is another collection of classicist *rock & roll* spiked with dance beats, much like any other ***Charlatans*** album.
>
> Where its predecessor was more informed by mechanized beats, the rhythms are more organic, which perfectly suits the rolling ***["North Country Boy"](https://cutt.ly/uIbq5Hz)*** the sweeping ***["One to Another"](https://cutt.ly/fIbwtJs)*** and the heart-tugging ***["How Can You Leave Us?"](https://cutt.ly/RIbwaho)***.
>
> On the whole, however, ***“Tellin' Stories”*** is more consistent than their earlier records, and the best songs showcase the band at its strongest, which is quite an achievement considering the traumas the ***Charlatans*** underwent during its recording. More than anything, that's a fitting salute to ***Collins***.
