Canadians really like real estate. It’s hard not to be excited when prices in hot markets like Toronto and Vancouver have been making global headlines. Around two-thirds of Canadians own their home, and the perception is generally held that owning your home is a smart investment.
In this episode of Common Sense Investing, I’m going to tell you why renting a place to live is not a waste of money. I’ll be talking about a lot more common sense investing topics in this series, so subscribe, and click the bell for updates.

Wars and financial markets have coexisted, and often been intertwined, for hundreds of years. Countries that have lost major wars have had their financial markets decimated, while global markets have been relatively resilient, even to major conflicts. Despite the relative resilience of global markets, crises and wars tend to reduce global market returns and increase their volatility.

Please note that while this content is broadly applicable, it was originally intended for a Canadian audience.
You can't compare rent to a mortgage payment. This way of thinking about the rent versus buy decision is extremely flawed. Comparing a mortgage payment to rent is not an apples to apples comparison. In order to properly assess the rent versus buy decision, we need to compare the total *unrecoverable costs* of renting to the total unrecoverable costs of owning.
That may sound like a complicated task, but I have boiled it down to a simple calculation.

This video is in response to a question from abe on LinkedIN. Abe wanted to know if he should hedge the foreign currency exposure of his equities when the Canadian dollar is weak.
There is no question that investing globally is beneficial. Diversification is the best way to increase your expected returns while decreasing your expected volatility. Diversification is, after all, known as the only free lunch in investing. When you decide to own assets all over the world, you are not just getting exposure to foreign companies, but also to foreign currencies.
I’m Ben Felix, Associate Portfolio Manager at PWL Capital. In this episode of Common Sense Investing, I’m going to help you decide if you should currency hedge your portfolio.

In this episode of Common Sense Investing, I’m going to tell you about some of the common ways that financial advice can be affected.
Through their regulatory organizations, most financial services professionals are obligated to offer their clients an investment that is suitable. Suitability is a broad term, and there are lots of other factors that may affect the advice that you receive. Let's go over these ending with my opinion on what's the single most logical way to invest.
My name is Ben Felix of PWL Capital and this is Common Sense Investing. I’ll be talking about this and many other common sense investing topics in this series, so subscribe and click the bell for updates. I’d also love to hear from you as to what topics you’d like me to cover in the comment section below!

Investing in a REIT gives you access to a liquid diversified portfolio of real estate assets, without the need to manage anything on your own. This makes some of the biggest issues with direct real estate investing like illiquidity, management intensiveness, and the inability to properly diversify, go away completely. Just like with stocks, it is possible to buy a low-cost index fund of REITs.

It is easy for investors to see economic news, like unemployment or GDP data, and get worried or excited about the impact that it will have on their investments. But there is something that many investors don’t realize. The stock market is not the economy, and the economy is not the stock market.

A lot of people are worried about how index funds might affect the integrity of the stock market. At the extreme, people have even compared index funds to the collateralized debt obligations that sent the global financial market into crisis in 2008.
I am going to tell you why index funds are not creating a bubble.

Within the past decade, Bitcoin has gone from being a fringe idea proposed in a paper written by a mysterious author, to a mainstream technology that some people are treating as a new asset class.
But is it a cash flow generating asset, a commodity, a currency, or a collectable? In today's episode of Common Sense Investing, I'll tell you a thing or two about Bitcoin, and why it's quite unlike any other investment.
I’ll be talking about a lot more common sense investing topics in this series, so subscribe, and click the bell for updates. I’d also love to read your thoughts and questions about this video in the comments below.
