I recently saw a video from Look Mum No Computer where he had incorporated an arduino based tuner into one of his synth modules and that got me thinking... and tinkering.
Along the way I'll compare it to another home-made guitar tuner that I built a very long time ago.
Today I'm dipping my toes into the ESP32 microcontroller, and at the same time exploring a couple of different ways of programming them.
I tried both the good ol' beginner friendly Arduino IDE and then stepped out of my comfort zone to try micropython for the first time.
Not the most earth shattering experiments, I realize, but I learned something so it's not a waste of time.

It's probably not the best way to do it.

Simple Electronics sent me one of his logo circuit board kits and suggested I could either use it as a n easy soldering kit, or as a coaster.
So I decided to do both!
Here's SimpleElectronics video about the design and his build of the board:

Except I just got this big box of stuff from Joey.
So sit back and enjoy this unboxing and exploration of whatever hall this stuff is

I found this early '90s era power supply on it's way to the scrap heap, and I got curious about what's under that massive heatsink.
Teardown Time!

Installing a basic (and cheap) DCC decoder in the very common Athearn HO scale locomotive chassis.
Hopefully this can help some beginners get past the fear of trying this for themselves.
Here is the manual for this decoder (in all of it's random linguistic glory) from the manufacturer's webpage:
http://laisdcc.com/LaisDcc_Decoders_Manual_V2.pdf
Link to the decoder I used:

I did a review of a very simnilar decoder about a year and a half ago:

What better thing to do on a cold autumn day than to curl up with a nice warm soldering iron.
Join me as I grab a random kit from my pile and do a nice leisurely kit build.
Today's randomly selected kit is a function generator - basically a test signal generator.
This kit only cost about $2.
No surprise I found it on e-bay (https://www.ebay.ca/itm/DC-12V-25V-ICL8038-DDS-Signal-Generator-Module-IC-DIY-Sine-Square-Triangle-Wave/322859593858)
That other less impressive signal generator was another kit build, which you can see here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TvfvN-0VwEE

In my ongoing quest to make my videos easier to watch, I got myself yet another cheap microphone to try out.
A BM-800 from Ebay, though it is available at all the usual cheap marketplaces.
Take a listen and let me know what you think. Was it worth the price?
