There are many reasons why you may want to add a low/high pass filter to your audio recording but you might not know why it's necessary. When recording sound, you don't need to record or include in your finished audio any sound except for the frequencies you wanted to record. This can help ensure your audio is as high a quality as possible. Everything from air conditioner noise to malfunctioning camera fans can affect your sound in an undesirable way which is why roll-off is such a good thing. In this video I'll explain high/low pass filters and why you would use them.
Note: I'm aware that the audio isn't up to my normal standard and I'm sorry. The content was too good not to air though.
Although you might not think much of it, there is a proper technique for taping down sound cables. Similarly, there is a very effective way to tape down sound mats to prevent tripping. Both may seem easy and like common sense but all too often I see people messing up these skills.
In this video I show to proper way to safely tape down cables and a technique I developed to help you tape down carpets more effectively and with more options. Both techniques are critical for sound utilities and boom operators but few possess these skills... until now.

Direct sunlight is harsh and unforgiving to a boom operator. Trying to get the boom close to the actor's face without shadowing can be difficult unless you know the secret. Sound Speeds!
Special thanks to boom operator Hugo Kundert for his help with the technique demonstration.

AI algorithms are getting scary good. Computers can already digitally replace people's faces and even make people do things they would never do but now it's being used to process your voice in extremely noisy settings. In this video I'm going to show you a podcasting AI algorithm and what it can do when you're just using on camera audio.

In this second episode of Audio Basics I explain microphones in a very simple way. Everything from the different kinds of polar patterns to how dynamic, condenser and ribbon microphones work is discussed in this video in a way where even the sound novice can benefit. Hopefully this video will help you to understand enough about microphones for the casual sound person without going too deep.

Planting microphones requires skill, plain and simple. Most people can hide a microphone out of the view of camera but will it be effective? Even professionals sometime lack in plant micing skills so in this video I'm going to show a few tricks that I use when planting microphones to make sure I get the best possible results.
You may wonder why I don't show locations where you can plant mics in this video. Easy - it changes according to the shot but if you know a few simple tricks, you can place microphones somewhere effectively. In this case the "where" is less important than the "how".

There are many tools that help you to block out unwanted background noise when using your voice for any kind of recording. There are people online that have shown them to be somewhat effective at reducing vocal bounce back in reflective rooms but how effective are they at removing high background noise?
In this video I take the very sensitive Rode NT1-A microphone out of it's shockmount and test it in a clamp by itself, in front of an isolation shield and inside a Crashguard. How well will it reduce high background noise that's competing with my voice during recording? Will the background noise be reduced enough to get good results out of noise suppression plug-ins?

It can be difficult to control all sounds on set. All you want is to record clean dialogue but so many things in the world make noise because they weren't designed with quietness as the top priority. We could talk for hours about solutions to common problems but in this video I show a couple of things you can use to quiet offending noises on set. Sound Speeds!

I know it sounds like a clickbait title but I assure you, this video delivers. The AT2035 is widely considered the best sounding microphone in the Audio-Technica 20 series of microphones. Priced around $150, it's got a great sound to it but what if I told you there's another brand name microphone with almost the exact same specs, that sounds nearly identical (better actually) and can be purchased for less money... Interested?
Note: Audio-Technica calls their microphone series the 20 and 40 series as opposed to the 2000 and 4000 series like I called them in this video. I've always called them that so I'll likely not change soon.
