The story of the Rich man and Lazarus is a PARABLE, it is not about a literal place of eternal torment. We know it's a parable because of Matthew 13:34 & Mark 4:34 which state that Yehoshua never spoke to the pharisees using anything other than parables and if it was literal a man could not speak calmly while burning, nor would he ask for a drop of water, rather than to get free. The water represents the "washing of water" by the "word of God", that is the "Holy Spirit" that refreshes us. Amos 8:11 speaks for the famine for the "word of God", that is a spiritual torment without being able to be refreshed and cleansed. We have died to our sin, been risen by the Holy Spirit, and people are still in torment around us. They don't understand what we say, because there's a great gulf fixed between them and us spiritually. We, as believers, who have been "born again" after dying to our sins, could say exactly what Yehoshua says here: John 8:42 Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me. 43 Why do ye not understand my speech? even because ye cannot hear my word. 44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do.
