Where do artists find inspiration from? Here are my methods for overcoming artists block, and how I find meaning through art.
To find inspiration for painting, I have some advice for fine artists. Namely finding inspiration from your own life, and more. I chat here about ways of finding inspiration as an artist while working on an oil portrait painting of my wife.
Thanks for watching. By the way, the music is all by Schubert, one of my favourite composers.
If you need a lot more information on painting flowers, go to https://www.damianosborne.com/how-to-paint-flowers-in-oils to read my comprehensive blog about the steps I took for painting a floral still life.
This blog I wrote has more in-depth information not included in the video.
How do you paint flowers in oils step by step?
In this alla prima flower painting video, I had a beautiful and exotic Amaryllis flower which I wanted to paint. It's best to paint from life when painting a floral still life in oils. The video goes into a bit of colour mixing, toning the canvas panel, and tricks when painting alla prima, or wet in wet.
I hope you enjoyed this brief flower painting tutorial. If there is anything I left out and you would like to know, please don’t hesitate to ask in the comments below.
Happy painting!

Please check out: https://www.damianosborne.com/painting-the-skin-tone-painting-the-figure-part-3 for more detailed information about the oil painting process I used in this video, particularly scumbling and glazing in oil paint, and the pigments for painting the skin tone.
There's more in-depth info on my blog not included in this video.
Painting the skin tone in oils shows figure painting in the classical technique of the Venetian and Flemish Old Masters. In this video, I am painting the second layer, or the overpainting layer. I use mostly scumbling oil painting techniques for painting the flesh tones.
By painting in layers, the artist is able to achieve a more realistic painting. This traditional overpainting layer in oils can be slowly build up in many painting sessions to create beautiful skin tones.
It is also easier to control your values, contrast and colour temperatures with a more limited palette per painting session.

Drawing roses with pen is quite relaxing and makes a lovely pattern or design. I tried to keep the pen hatching to a minimum to create a more illustrative style of pen drawing.

What's the Point of Art? Part 1 of my series 'A Painting is Not Just a Picture!'
What makes art good? Why is art so hard? And how long does a painting take? Should you study art?
In this video series , I explore why art is necessary and talk about what makes 'good' art, and how subjective that is. I also talk about the resurgence of representational art and 'Post-Contemporary' art. The travails of painting are mentioned - where art is damn hard work, but also an act of love, and of giving one's best. I hope this helps you with finding inspiration for your art.

Painting the halftones is important for realistic skin tones in figure painting. Keeping the tonal values subdued, means we have to consider the relative color temperature shifts across the form. So what are halftones in oil painting exactly?
