The latest rumours have shown what’s assumed to be the 15.5” MacBook Air with the same screen resolution as the 14” MacBook Pro running an M2 chip appearing in developers logs… so have I been wrong about M3 all this time? Is it NOT coming at WWDC? Not so fast… So what’s Mark Gurman predicting for WWDC? From the powered on newsletter, he says… * the Reality headset, the first major new Apple product category in nearly a decade * a new xrOS operating system and software development kit * new MacBooks * iOS 17 * iPadOS 17 * macOS 14 * a major watchOS 10 update BUT then he caveats: “The models coming in June probably won’t boast major new M3 chips. Instead, they’ll run something in line with the current M2 processors.” So what’s going on here? Well, I personally think he may be off base here. We KNOW that TSMC started producing 3nm wafers of chips in December 2022. We also know that Apple has bought all of it. All the 3nm chips they can make. For a year. They’re not f***ing around here. So are we saying that all those chips are for an iPhone that isn’t releasing until September, and even if it is, only half the iPhone lineup will be using it, as the base phones use last years chips which are made on a different process. Does it not make sense that some of these chips are the M3? But those developer logs, seeing 15.5” displays running M2. Well I’d say it’s not impossible that Apple would have internal development devices that are using MacBook Air M2 boards to test the displays ahead of full production and assembly. Or maybe Apple has ways of disguising the M3 as it would appear in developer logs to avoid super early leaks? The question I’d ask is this. Would you buy a 15.5” M2 MacBook Air a year after the smaller version came out with the same design and same chip? Assuming Vadim from Max Tech is right and the update cycle for M chips IS 18 months, you’d be 6 months from your device being last generation even if you buy on release day. Because there’s ZERO chance Apple updates the 13” Air and not the 15” in 6 months. They’d never do that with the 14” and 16” Pro, so why the Air? Can you imagine the backlash Apple would feel from M2 15” Air owners? It makes zero sense. Mark goes on to say that he expects the new 24” iMac, Mac Pro, 13” Air and for some reason a refreshed 13” MacBook Pro by the end of the year, and he’s said unequivocally that he iMac at least will be updated with M2. And what else would be going into the 13” Air, needless 13” Pro etc if not M3. I don’t believe for one second that an M2 powered 15” Air will go on sale. I believe they’ve tested the displays with an M2 board, but this makes no sense. It seems like being an Apple leaker is the newest version of being instafamous, and certainly at this time of year, it seems like anyone who tweets something confidently, especially while being a faceless random Twitter user with just the words “Apple” and “leakz” in some combination in their handle can get huge coverage. Accounts throw out hundreds of tweets, each giving a specific of a feature, or a vague idea (I’m looking at you CoinX), or a rumoured date. They extrapolate to the nth degree anything mentioned in an earnings call, work out dates from past event patterns, calculate how many minutes Tim Apple will talk about each topic. Happily we have websites like AppleTrack which keep tabs on a number of the highest profile “leakers”, though they can only track specific claims. That’s where issues begin, because of course, anyone can tweet anything they like, so do you have to include in your accuracy reports ones that are satire? Do you have to include those that say “in the next 5 years Apple will introduce X” - and if so do they not get an “inaccurate” until 5 years are up? How accurate does something have to be? Could you just say “higher resolution displays in the next three years” without numbers and add an “accurate” point if that happens? Vague statements make this so much harder, as well as the fact that inaccurate tweets can be deleted after the fact, so unless they’re screenshotted at the time, there’s no record. And when does someone qualify for Apple Track, how many leaks do they need to have released, and with what track record? Don’t get me wrong, I read all the leaks with as much interest as anyone else. And there are certainly some leakers who have legit information. Jon Prosser in the past has been able to accurately post dates of events, even tweeting their contents immediately ahead of the announcement. Clearly accurate and timely information. But then, all good things come to an end, and last week his information was flawed, and likely by no fault of his own. Maybe Apple found out who his sources were and fed them false information. Maybe things changed at the last minute. All possible. The industry on Twitter of leakers who all claim to have the inside track is in most cases, fake and wannabe. There are some with real, or at least to some level verified information, those who take the whole matter seriously, and others who throw as many ideas and theories out as humanly possible, and rely on confirmation bias, just like psychics as we’re psychologically programmed to remember the hits and forget the misses. In the most part at least.
