In this video I make bromoauric acid by reacting precipitated gold powder with hydrobromic acid and elemental bromine generated by the addition of small portions of 48.5% nitric acid. Once the bromoauric acid solution was made potassium bromide was added and the solution was put through several cycles of evaporation and reconstitution with water to remove the residual HBr, Br2, and HNO3. The final product was crystallized under vacuum (no crystal film pics on this video though). I couldn't figure out how to put a link in this video on BC so I am going to include a link to my buddies channel here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCkI_VAWYzdy96RiZQlweMlA

This simple experiment is easily done at home. It is a great demo of the principles involved with density and osmosis. Droplets of potassium ferrocyanide solution are introduced into a solution of copper sulfate. The droplets rapidly becomes coated with a thin membrane of insoluble cupric ferrocyanide and sink. Over the next few minutes the droplets absorb water from the copper sulfate solution which causes them to become less dense and rise to the top of the solution.

In this short video I demonstrate the synthesis of dibismuth tetroxide from potassium bismuthate that I prepared previously. You can find the synthesis of potassium bismuthate and of dibismuth tetroxide on pages 628-629 of the Handbook of Preparative Inorganic Chemistry. You can download a PDF of this book at the Zlibrary. A link to the ZLibrary homepage as well as a direct link to the download page of the textbook can be found below.

Proving that the benzaldehyde prep from benzyl alcohol using (bis)pyridinesilver(I) permanganate did indeed work by measuring the melting point of the benzaldehyde dinitrophenylhydrazone obtained from the experiment.

In this video we continue our discussion about stereochemistry. We cover using planes of symmetry to identify achiral molecules, the CIP or R,S system of naming enantiomers, the rotation of plane polarized light by chiral molecules, the use and parts of polarimeters, and specific rotation.

In this video I synthesize vanadyl sulfate using vanadium pentoxide, ~1.6M sulfuric acid, and a mix of methanol and ethanol (although pure alcohol will do). This is a MUCH easier method for making vanadyl sulfate than using sulfur dioxide gas or sodium metabisulfite as the reducing agent. I also made a few vanadyl compounds (ammonium vanadyl thiocyanate, tris(ethylenediamine)oxovanadium(IV), and what I think is vanadyl dithizonate).

In this video I use the arsenic trisulfide I made in the last video to make sodium thioarsenate; the arsenic analog of sodium thioantimonate. This is a more challenging synthesis. The fumes from this prep were among the worst I have ever dealt with. The final product cannot be rinsed or recrystallized without significant loss of the product.

In this video I show how uranyl sulfate is prepared from uranium trioxide which itself was made using the method shown in the previous video. Uranyl sulfate is VERY useful since it can be used to prepare a very wide range of uranyl salts by metathesis reactions with barium salts. The alkali uranates are different from the diuranates we've previously seen. They have a formula R2UO4 where R is Na or K (R can also be Rb and Cs).
