A work bench power supply is one of the most useful and often expensive pieces of kit for someone just getting into electronics. With recent developments there are some variable power supplies that are available from Chinese suppliers. However I cam across this that offers an even lower priced stepping stone into the world of electronics.
I would like to start out by saying this is not a paid review, I purchased the device with my own money and am in no way affiliated with the sellers.
Purchased for $10 CAD from a ebay seller, it converts a standard ATX computer power supply into a lab bench power supply.
Yes I know there are lots of videos out there showing us how to modify the supply itself to function like this does, and those work and they are a great start. But i can not in good conscious recommend that one of the first electronics projects someone attempts be with live mains voltage. This little board offers the same end result, with none of the burn you house down potential :)
This little board will give you -12v, 12v, 5v and 3.3v, with a large amount of amperage available. While not as useful and a variable supply with current limiting, these voltages are the standard one used in most hobby electronics.

REVISIT coming soon!
Bigger is better right? Well with seven segment displays this also means a much higher forward voltage per segment. In this video we will show you how I solved the issue.

What is up Makers?
Today we are taking an awesome 3D Printer from days past, we will be modernizing this awesome printer over the next few weeks.
The printer is a ORD MH3000 R1. This is a 5 head water cooled 3D printer! meaning it can maintain vastly different temperatures for each head, allowing for multi material printing. Two of the heads use thermo couples as well, allowing some seriously high temperature printing.
Sadly, while it had modern electronics when it was released, this is a dinosaur now. So we will be swapping the control board for a BTT board with the expansion to allow us to control the 8 stepper motors needed.
So here are the upgrade targets:
1) Big Tree Tech GTR control board
2) Klipper
3) Convert the system from 12v to 24v power
4) Replace heaters
5) Add PEI bed on a flex plate
6) Add auto bed leveling
7) 7" touch screen control
8) Modern cooling fluid
9) Separate power and control electronics to external box
10) Enclose the printer with active chamber heating (24V)
Video List:
1) Mechanical Teardown
2) Extruder and hot end tear down clean and reassemble
3) New electronics (Setup and Test)
4) Soldering the Raspberry Pi 4 to the GTR and configuring UART via GPIO
5) create and electronics enclosure
6) Re assemble printer
7) Test and Tune

Recently Maker Media has become insolvent, and laid off all of their employers. While many have already chimed in on the effects of this on the maker community, I figured I would too.
Some people have been saying this is a huge blow to maker culture, I disagree, while it is sad to see such a titan go, I dont think it will really have an impact in the long run.

During Googles' announcement of the Assistant SDK they were specific that is was for the Raspberry Pi 3. But with so little difference between the three and the two, will it run on a Raspberry Pi 2? Today we find out!

Today in the first maker talk video, we are discussing the merits of comment in code, are they needed? if so, how many and when. Join me in Bavaria as we dive into this topic.
