Despite Israeli restrictions, surfers in Gaza hope to join global competition
Surfing enthusiasts in Gaza hope to meet other surfers from around the world and participate in global competitions, but Israeli travel restrictions prevent them from leaving the besieged strip. Israel also bans the fiberglass material needed for surfboards, which makes the sport difficult.

MR. PRICE: Yesterday, the Sudan Sovereign Council and Council of Ministers voted to repeal its more than six-decade-long boycott of Israel. The United States welcomes the announcement. It’s an important step that will create new, promising opportunities for the people of Sudan, Israel, and across the region.
The announcement brings Sudan and Israel closer to normalizing relations and will have tangible, immediate impacts on the lives of the Sudanese and Israelis, allowing trade and investment that was previously blocked.
This announcement was the result of hard work by our diplomats and their counterparts in Sudan and Israel. We are pleased to welcome this new era in Sudanese-Israeli relations, and we look forward to seeing the fruits, the fruits this boycott’s end will bear.
And finally, I wanted to make note that as of Sunday, we can confirm that the department has completed deployment of vaccines to all of our posts abroad. This announcement represents over 190,000 doses distributed to 220 postings around the world, allowing us to offer the vaccine to all direct-hire employees, locally engaged staff, and eligible family members.
Thanks to the work of countless people – our diplomatic couriers, post representatives, logisticians, and clinicians both here in the United States and around the world – not a single dose was lost in transit since we began our vaccine rollout in December of last year.
This collective effort is reflective of the Secretary’s commitment to support the health, safety, and the security of the department’s workforce so that we can continue to carry out our mission on behalf of the American people.

Palestinian journalists on the ground in Jenin refugee camp say they are being targeted by Israeli forces, along with medics and civilians. Videos show journalists being fired at with live ammunition, despite clearly being marked as press. Palestinian-American veteran journalist Shireen Abu Akleh was killed by Israeli forces while covering a raid on Jenin camp just one year ago.

Earlier this month, Israeli forces bombed the Said Mish'al Center for Culture and Science in Gaza to the ground, claiming it was being used by Hamas for military operations. The center was beloved among Gazans and was celebrated as a place where people could express their pain, grief, happiness, and perseverance through song, dance, and theater. Thousands of Palestinians in Gaza mourned the destruction of the center, which had survived three Israeli offensives over the past decade. Aside from being a place where people could go to to escape their hardships for a moment, the center was also a space where, according to the director, the people of Gaza resisted the occupation by preserving the Palestinian culture and passing it on to future generations.

HEBRON, occupied West Bank -- Muhanned Qafesha, a resident of Tel Rumeida, Hebron, takes Mondoweiss through the arduous journey some residents of the city have been subjected to after Israeli forces made the town a closed military zone in November.
Following the establishment of the closed military zone Israel implemented a new number system in the area. Each household within the zone was given an ID number which is now necessary to be able to access Tel Rumaida. Anyone without a number is barred from entering the town.
Many residents and visitors alike have instead chosen to take a footpath through the muddy back-hills of Tel Rumeida to get home, instead of being subjected the military checkpoint at the city center. The Israeli checkpoint used to be the more convenient entrance to their town, but now can take hours as Israel "heightens security."
While the footpath is dangerous, and non-residents taking the path are doing so illegally, Qafesha said many choose to take the alternative entrance out of protest, while others take it because they have no other choice.

In this episode we have a conversation with Phil Weiss and Yakov Hirsch about the cultural sources of pro-Israel movements in American politics.
For several years now Hirsch has examined what he calls "hasbara culture" -- the ways that a discourse of Jewish victimhood has conquered Jewish, Israeli, and even American political culture.
Hirsch explains how this “hasbara culture” worldview has been propagated by Benjamin Netanyahu and other Israeli politicians, by anti-antisemitism organizations like the Anti-Defamation League, and by, quote, “Never Again” journalists with prominent platforms, notably Jeffrey Goldberg, Bari Weiss, Bret Stephens and Yair Rosenberg.
Having the hasbara culture world view is what it means to be a “good Jew” these days according to Hirsch, and we must confront this alternative reality if there is to be justice in the land from the river to the sea.
When the conversation begins, Yakov is describing in detail the events surrounding the death of Abdel Fattah al-Sharif, a Palestinian who stabbed an Israeli soldier in the occupied city of Hebron in March 2016. Al-Sharif was shot and was lying wounded and defenseless on the ground when another Israeli soldier, Elor Azaria, shot him in the head from close range, killing him. The event was captured on video by the Israeli human rights group B’Tselem.

Palestinian swimmer Mary al-Atrash, 22, is one of six Palestinians competing this year in Rio as part of the largest delegation Palestine has ever sent to the Olympics Games.
Al-Atrash will compete in the 50 meters freestyle, but her training has been complicated. Not only does she not have an Olympic-size pool to train in, but she also has no training partners. Nearby Jerusalem has better facilities, including several Olympic-sized pools and many swimmers to train with. However, because of the Israeli occupation, al-Atrash is unable to travel to Jerusalem to train.
Mary al-Atrash is extremely proud to wear the Palestinian colors in Rio and can’t wait to compete in the the Olympic games.

Israel’s health care system is recognized globally for its high quality of care and advanced technology, but according to Physicians for Human Rights Israel there are tremendous health disparities and inequality between Israel's Jewish and Palestinian populations. This is especially true of those Palestinians living under Israeli military occupation.

If it wasn't clear by now, Israel has one goal in Gaza: to ethnically cleanse the Palestinians there. From Israeli think tanks, to leaked documents from Israel's Intelligence Ministry, Israel is outlining its plans of pushing Gazans into the Egyptian Sinai.
