Tenochtitlan was the capital of the Aztec Empire, founded in 1325 on lake Texcoco. At its height, the city had 300.000 inhabitants, with a grand market, many palaces and a great pyramid where captives were sacrificed to the Mexica gods. In 1521 Hernan Cortes besieged and conquered the city, founding Mexico City on its ruins.

After the Fall of Rome, Europe descended into the dark ages. By the 11th century Europe started to recover and by the 1300's it was already in a golden age. All of Europe was under a system of feudalism, however things were changing in Italy.
The north of Italy is divided into independent city states under the rule of despots and assemblies of oligarchs who are constantly competing among themselves. One area of competition is art and scholarship. Early Humanists like Dante, Giotto and Petrarch are early beneficiaries of this patronage.
The word Humanism comes from the Humanists interest in the humanities and their love of antiquity. At the same time this cultural shift is happening, society in Northern Italy is throwing off the bonds of feudalism and is becoming more and more individualistic. Men like Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello and Brunelleschi find fertile ground for their art under the patronage of the Medici.
While Italian Humanists are fascinated with the moral superiority of antiquity, Northern Humanists are more interested in the Bible. With the same social changes happening in Northern Europe, this inevitably leads to the Protestant Reformation.
This ultimately leads to a conservative reaction, however with the printing press, capitalism and a divided Europe, the spirit of the Renaissance is unstoppable; leading to the Enlightenment and ultimately our current world.

It's 1529. After Hernan Cortes conquers the rest of Mexico, he is forced to travel to Spain to clear himself of allegations of corruption. Charles V takes away Cortes's power, judging him too independent.
During this trip he meets a distant relative, Francisco Pizarro and tells him all about conquering a mighty empire. Pizarro and his two companions, Diego de Almagro and Hernando de Luque have already conducted two expeditions to find the great kingdom that they believe lies south of Panama.
In 1530 Pizarro heads out on his third expedition with 180 men. Once he arrives, he finds out that a civil war had broken out in the Inca Empire. After the death of Huayna Capac, Atahualpa defeated Huascar and now usurps power.
Pizarro uses the chaos to his advantage, and going by Cortes's playbook, he marches to Cajamarca and captures Atahualpa. Atahualpa proposes to fill a room full of gold as a ransom, but after the Spanish get their gold, they still decide to kill him.
More turmoil follows as Almagro rebels against Pizarro, but Pizarro's forces defeat him at the Battle of Las Salinas. Pizarro is murdered in 1541, and more chaos follows. Pedro de la Gasca the Viceroy of Peru finally restores order in 1545. This is just in time for in 1546 huge deposits of silver are found at Potosi and Zacatecas. By the end of the 16th century the Spanish Empire in America enters its first golden age.

After the fall of Bulgaria and Serbia, the Ottoman Empire shows up on the border of Hungary. Sigismund of Luxembourg tries to combat them, but by this time the state is so weak, that the defense of the country falls to the barons.
This is when John Hunyadi rises to the occasion. In 1441 and 1442 he defeats two large Ottoman armies. As momentum builds, he pushes deep into Ottoman territory during the Long March of 1443-44. As a result of his success, the possibility of a crusade is looking ever more likely.

It's 1559. King Henry II of France dies in a tragic accident. His 15 year old son, Francis II follows him on the throne, but he quickly falls under the influence of the Guise. Tensions are already high due to the Protestant vs. Catholic conflict, and this only makes things worse. Calvinists such as the Prince of Conde and Admiral Coligny feel threatened.
After the Conspiracy of Amboise and the succession of Charles IX, Catherine of Medici attempts to compromise by the Edict of January of 1562. But with the Massacre of Vassy and the intervention of Philip II and Elizabeth I, war seems inevitable.

Catholic Church is mired in corruption by the 16th century. In 1517 Martin Luther publishes his 95 Point Thesis at Wittenberg, starting the Protestant Reformation. He is summoned to the Diet of Worms, where Charles V declares him an outlaw. Along comes Frederick III of Saxony, Luther's prince to save him. The Magisterial Reformation succeeds not only in Germany, but in Sweden and Denmark too. The French and the English Reformations also start, but end with diverging results. Another consequence of the Reformation is the Knights Revolt and the Peasants War.
In 1521 Huldrych Zwingli begins the Swiss Reformation. Groups of Anabaptists also emerge in Zürich. The Swiss Reformation continues with John Calvin. The Calvinist Reformation is particularly successful in France and the Low Countries, leading to religious wars. After the Council of Trent and the formation of the Jesuits, the Catholic Counter-Reformation picks up.
Charles V is victorious in the First Schmalkaldic War, as Protestants are crushed at the Battle of Mühlberg. Nevertheless Charles is forced to grant religious freedom at the Peace of Augsburg in 1555. Confessionalism takes hold over Europe, and Catholics are on a crash course with Protestants...

It's 1612. After the Time of Troubles, the colonization of Siberia starts afresh. The Russians expand along the rivers of Siberia in the Taiga belt. Sable and black fox are the most desired by fur trappers. The Siberian fur trade accounts for 20% of the state's budget. In 1639 Cossacks reach the Pacific, and a century later Vitus Bering crosses over to Alaska.Russia's border with China is established by the Treaty of Narchinsk, and Siberia irrevocably becomes part of Russia.

After the conquest of Mexico and the Incas, the Spanish Empire begins to flourish. In 1565 Miguel Lopez de Legazpi finally settles the Philippines. Treasure from the New World makes up one fifth of the royal revenue.
Nonetheless, expenses far outweigh incomes, as Spain is ruined by foreign wars. In the 17th century the French, Dutch and the English set up their own colonies in the Caribbean, making the closed economic system of the empire untenable.
The Spanish Bourbons try to introduce reforms, but by this time Spain is already a second rate power. After the Napoleonic wars, the Bolivarian Revolution sweeps the Spanish from the mainland. Gradually the Caribbean and the Philippines are also lost. The last colonies in Africa are relinquished in 1975, officially ending the Spanish Empire.

After the discovery of America by Columbus, an intense race developed between Portugal and Spain to reach India. At stake was the very lucrative spice trade controlled by Arabs, Egyptians and Venetians up to this point. In 1488 during the age of exploration, Portuguese explorer Bartolomeu Diaz rounds the Cape of Good Hope, opening the way to the Indian Ocean. Next year Vasco da Gama makes the first trip to India, establishing relations with Calicut and its ruler, the Zamorin. Pedro Alvares Cabral leads the second expedition, discovering Brazil on his way to India. He opens a feitoria, however relations soon sour and war breaks out between the Portuguese and Calicut. Further fleets follow and Alfonso de Albuquerque lays the foundations to the Portuguese India Empire (the Estado da India).
