2,200 years old, 163 miles long, an incalculable quantity of stones laid for its construction, and an infinite number of motoring stories to tell. The Via Emilia is the most powerful road in the world because all the brands of the Motor Valley were born among its curves, but it is also much more... In 1978, BMW debuted its first M model: the M1. It was also the first mid-engined car from the Bavarian manufacturer, sporting a 3.5-liter inline-six engine with a robust (for the time) 274 horsepower (201 kilowatts) and 243 pound-feet (329 newton-meters) of torque. More than 40 years later, and BMW is debuting only its second standalone M model: the Concept XM.
While the Concept XM and M1 are technically siblings, these two vehicles couldn't be more different. The XM is a high-riding, V8-powered, plug-in–hybrid crossover with a jaw-dropping 750 hp (551 kW) and 737 lb-ft (1,000 Nm) on tap. Better yet, this wild concept previews a production version destined to debut in 2022, likely for the 2023 model year.

We come to expect certain things from off-road vehicles, but none more so than a willingness to sacrifice on-road livability for dirt-road capability. A Toyota 4Runner, for example, has all the grace and agility of a hippo, while the Jeep Wrangler takes steering inputs as mere suggestions. But we accept these drawbacks because the vehicles are incredibly fun in the dirt and on the rocks. The 2021 Ford Bronco has no such drawbacks.
To be clear, there are things to dislike about the Bronco. But as an off-road vehicle that also works on the pavement, it's as good as the Land Rover Defender. As a pure off-roader, it can go wheel to wheel with the toughest Jeep Wrangler when the road turns to mud or sand. And as the reintroduction of an iconic nameplate, it's faithful to the core. The new Bronco is everything enthusiasts hoped it would be.

We head to the California High Desert to compare the 2021 Ford Bronco Sport Badlands and the 2021 Toyota RAV4 TRD Off-Road. Our first test is a drag race, with multiple runs on a dry lakebed surface. The Bronco Sport has the horsepower advantage, but the RAV4 has a lesser curb weight.
Editors Brett Evans and Clint Simone also compare the styling of the two cars, deciding which has the better look.

The Crossland X features the skilled craftsmanship and harmony of shapes and forms typical of Opel design. Signature cues characteristic of the Rüsselsheim brand include the bold grille and the winglets that proudly embrace the Opel lightning flash emblem; the characteristic wing graphics of the headlights; and the blade along each side of the body.
The surfaces are fluid and sculptural, with crisp lines of precision, while the chrome trimmed, two-tone floating roof enables a high level of personalization. The high-quality of the overall execution is displayed in the high-tech full LED headlamps, while the horizontal lines that flow around the body combine with the raised taillights to make the Crossland X look wider.
