Stone Slams/Throws in the Snow, and Paused Zercher Squats
This was the meat of today's workout, although of course I warmed up and did other sets of throwing and ramp-up sets of squats. I'm getting back to heavier and more cold/uncomfortable stuff, in an attempt to improve my strength and mental toughness. Yes, I completely suck at throwing, as I have virtually no fast-twitch muscle, but I'm trying to get a little more explosive anyway. The Zerchers felt surprisingly good. If I can stay healthy and consistent, look for the weight to increase substantially over the next few months.
I've talked before about the synergistic nature of exercise and cold exposure, and this was another good session for that. It was 25 degrees when I started, and had "warmed" to 29 degrees by the time I finished. My hands and feet got a little cold, mainly while in the snow, but my torso was warm (and even a little sweaty) the entire time. The brown adipose tissue (BAT) is activated and effective!
Enthusiastic puppy alert! Hopefully this isn't too dizzying to watch. I had to frequently rotate around or make other sudden movements to avoid leash tangles and keep Shasta on track. There was almost a foot of accumulated snow on the ground, and the temperature was hovering around 5-6 degrees. It was a glorious day for a hike in the woods! The end is a bit abrupt because my camera mount loosened up on its own and then my battery died due to the cold. Since I had said about everything I had planned, I didn't bother to film a new ending once my phone warmed up.
Feel free to share your thoughts about my observations or anything else you think we should expect in 2022.

Here are some thoughts regarding an unfortunate event in Pakistan (see link below), as I walk our big puppy in fairly deep snow. Some of the drifted areas were mid-thigh for me, so the going was difficult, but it was good exercise for both of us.
If you don't currently carry a sleeping bag or blanket(s) in your vehicle, please consider doing so immediately. Even space blankets are better than nothing. In an unexpected scenario like this it could literally mean the difference between life and death.

One cluster set out three, with just over 2x my bodyweight. For me, that's fairly heavy, so cluster sets allow me to get in more reps with that weight while also eliminating any help from stretch reflex. Pulling every rep from a dead stop definitely increases the challenge.
After the 15 total reps of deadlift I did supersets of weighted chinups and high-rep barbell overhead presses. Then I finished up with a short but heavy farmer's carry that destroyed what was left of my grip. Today my hamstrings, lats, and traps are all a little sore, but it's the good soreness that comes from building muscle and strength through progressive overload.
It has been a while since I did 20-rep "breathing squats". This is with slightly less than my bodyweight on the bar (which is not impressive at all), and it was a bit of a grind. I want to substantially increase the weight I can do for 20 reps by the end of this year. I'm also working at building tougher skin on my back and shoulders, as currently the knurling on the bar gets rather painful as the weight increases. Look for an update sometime in November or December.
Musings from the nettle and thistle patch, on a hot morning. I was working on heat adaptation, harvesting nettles, and building a little physical and mental toughness. The cameo by two fawns was an unexpected bonus.
Only one full "rep" out of eight in my driveway session. It's tough having to periodically make steering corrections, as getting it rolling is always the hardest part, but that's what happens when I don't have a "driver". As always, there's no need for a commercial gym or lots of high-tech equipment to get a really effective full-body workout.
This was my first time ever attempting this type of shelter. Minimal bedding, no heat source, and temperatures in the mid-teens - how fun is that?! I could have used my candle lantern for a little warmth, or gathered some wood and built a fire, but this was a good test of a snow shelter, my bedding, and my ability to endure cold.
As I was breaking camp at about 6:00 I saw the thermometer reading 14 degrees. By that point I had snacked, had a couple cups of coffee, and moved around a fair amount though, so I was feeling much warmer.
While I'm sure I could have done a better job constructing the shelter, I'm pleased with my first effort. It would definitely not be my first choice for an overnight shelter, but in a survival scenario in deep snow and in an area with limited trees it could be a life-saver.
This is my most-viewed video on YouTube, from way back in 2019.
Only 105 pounds, and only a few minutes, but boy did it hurt!
This is a great way to have a full-body workout and a near-death experience simultaneously.

I wanted to post updates just to let viewers know what has been happening. I still fully intend to do more outdoorsy, workout, and Jeep project content fairly soon, but life has not gone remotely according to plan lately.
Please excuse the irritating static in the audio, and the jarring video as I drive over rutted snow and ice. Not exactly ideal conditions for filming, I know. At least the new phone mount worked great and held it rock solid over all the bumps!
Here's the write-up confirming our ranking in Washington.
