Nahe der ukrainischen Hauptstadt Kiew ist ein US-Journalist bei einem Schusswechsel ums Leben gekommen. Dies bestätigte der für die Stadt Kiew zuständige Polizeichef, Andrei Nebytow, am Sonntag. Die genauen Umstände zu dem Tod des Kriegskorrespondenten sind jedoch weiterhin unklar.
Der Videofilmer Brent Renaud, ein bekannter Kriegsjournalist und ehemaliger Korrespondent der New York Times, soll am Sonntag laut Angaben des Kiewer Polizeichefs, Andrei Nebytow, im Zuge der heftigen Kämpfe in Irpen erschossen worden sein. Die ukrainische Stadt Irpen ist in den vergangen Tagen immer wieder Schauplatz schwerer Kämpfe zwischen russischen und ukrainischen Streitkräften gewesen. Über die genauen Umstände zu Renauds Tod ist bisweilen nichts bekannt.
In wessen Auftrag der Kriegsjournalist in der stark umkämpften Stadt zugange war, ist noch unklar. Während er in mehreren Medien-Berichten als Korrespondent der New York Times identifiziert wurde, erklärte diese unmittelbar nach Bekanntwerden der Todesnachricht, Renaud sei zum Zeitpunkt seines Todes nicht im Auftrag der US-Zeitung dort tätig gewesen. Besonders brisant: Renaud soll bei seinem Tod einen Presseausweis getragen haben, der ihm von der New York Times bereits "vor vielen Jahren für einen Auftrag ausgestellt worden war". Demnach habe der Kriegsjournalist zuletzt 2015 für die amerikanische Zeitung gearbeitet.

Die USA haben Moskau damit gedroht, dass die NATO im Falle eines beabsichtigten oder unbeabsichtigten Angriffs auf NATO-Territorium mit "voller Wucht" zurückschlagen würde. Zuvor hatte Russland einen ukrainischen Militärstützpunkt nahe der polnischen Grenze angegriffen.
Mit scharfen Worten hat Mexiko auf Kritik des EU-Parlaments an der Lage der Medien im Land reagiert. Die Abgeordneten hätten sich "wie Schafe der reaktionären und putschistischen Strategie" der Opposition angeschlossen. Mexiko sei keine Kolonie mehr.
