While everyone is waiting for the final version of KSP 0.16 here's something else to play around with. We're used to athletes putting their names on games, but I think Buzz Aldrin has been the only astronaut to put his name on a game. Way back in 1993 "Buzz Aldrin's Race Into Space" was released, it was an managment simulator which let you plan the space program, competing against a foreign program for the prestige associated with landing on the moon.
The developers Fritz Bronner & Michael McCarty have since released the game for free and given people permission to freely use it (as long as they don't sell the game!). Furthermore, the source code has been released and an improved open source version, created in part by the original coder, is available for free from http://sourceforge.net/projects/raceintospace/ ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KT_T0KUtu0g
Space Foxes, Space Cats & Space Naked Apes living together on the same planets? That's what the future holds for the Igarian Corporation.

Closing out January with a handful of launches, SpaceX carry Cygnus to the orbit, the cargo space craft which is supposed to provide dissimilar redundancy to the commercial resupply services contract. The European LISA gravitational wave antenna gets officially adopted by ESA after 30 years of development. Iran's Simorgh rocket make it to orbit after 7 years of failed attempts. And much more.

The last major addition to the International Space Station was in 2011, after that the forced retirment of the Space Shuttle meant that new hardware was necessarily small, but this year we're seeing a number of new pieces of hardware which will be attached to the station which will expand it and change the way it looks.

I had a rare opportunity to actually go into Meteor Crater (http://meteorcrater.com/) with scientists from the B612 Foundation and view this amazing structure from the inside. Meteor Crater in Arizona is the best example of an impact crater on Earth, there are larger and younger craters but none are so well preserved. As such it remains an important scientific site and access is extremely limited.
There is a great public visitor center which has some great exhibits, crater viewing and guided tours of the crater rim if you are a space fan then this is a unique location http://meteorcrater.com/
The B612 Foundation is a non-Profit organization working in the field of asteroid defense, if you enjoyed this I urge you to donate to B612 https://b612foundation.org/
This was recorded during a short rest break at the bottom, I had one take and adlibbed the script from memory, but I do make a couple of mistakes. In particular when talking about the velocity of the impactor I should have said miles per second instead of kilometers per second.
The camera is a Ricoh Theta S which uses a pair of fish eye lenses to take a full 360 degree video, the resolution is sadly quite low, but I felt that being surrounded on all sides by the crater walls represented a unique setting where the sacrifice was worth it.

The main story is that Astra's tiny launch vehicle almost made it to orbit, getting to space but coming up 0.5km/sec short in terms of velocity. But the weekend also had lots of other rocket activity including many important launches by Angara, Delta IV, Electron, Falcon 9 and.... we got some great views of the aftermath of the Starship 'landing' showing the guts of the vehicle.

Spaceteam is a team game played on smartphones & tablets, where a group of players shout commands to each other and keep the ship running. It's free, it's also very silly and a fun thing for families.

An over ambitious game which lets you fly space fighters, land on a planet, shoot people in a FPS and even command giant starships. A game of grand scale developed using the best technology available to the developers, lead by a personality who's name is known throughout the space sim world.
Trying to actually give it a chance, after all many of the bugs should be fixed after 10 years. Then again, I'm afraid that if I reletlessly mocked it like everyone else that I'd incur the wrath of Derek.

Taking a look at Take On Mars - its latest update has expanded the manned mission campaign with a series of missions centered around surviving after a failed landing on Mars.
It's a bit like that book that was made into a movie, I think it was called 'The Botanist Who Was Stranded On Mars'.
