Game Info --------------------------------------------------- Developer: Konami Publisher: Konami (Centuri) Year of Release: 1983 Game Review & Impressions --------------------------------------------------- Responsible for arthritic fingers and crippling RSI, Track & Field is one of Konami's earliest arcade releases, and it's remarkably impressive game for its time. This recreation of track and field athletics is well realised, and competing to set world records in each event is incredibly addictive. There are a total of 6 events in each competition: 100m sprint; long jump; javelin; hammer throw; high jump and 100m hurdles. Players much meet the required score to qualify for the next event, which becomes progressively harder to meet with each successive round of the competition. Track & Field lacks any kind of joystick, with the player operating three buttons to control his or her athlete. The 100m sprint consists of little more than hitting buttons as fast as possible, which is sure to test your own endurance as much as the athletes themselves. The long jump and javelin throw require more coordination, with one button controlling speed while the other controls trajectory. Perhaps the most involved of all events is the high jump, which involves timing skills to Fosbury Flop your way over the bar successfully. What really sets Track & Field apart, other than its incredibly simple concept, is the presentation. The graphics and animation are brilliant for 1983, and the speech synthesis for the announcers would have seemed amazing for the time. Flourishes like the umpire who measures the distance of the player's long jump and brief excerpt of Vangelis' Chariots of Fire are finishing touches to a game as brilliantly simple as it is simply brilliant. In reality, it's much more of an arcade game, involving navigating a series of courses on a motocross dirt bike, attempting to beat a series of courses in as short a time as possible. The sideways-scrolling sections are reminiscent of the Kikstart games, and involve jumping over obstacles whilst staying atop your bike. It's really difficult until you master the art of pulling a wheelie when climbing hills and jumping. The overhead sections are pretty much the same thing, just viewed from a different perspective. These are much harder, however, thanks to some rubbish course design, which requires the gift of second sight. You can't see much of the track ahead, so you'll run into dead ends and crash constantly until you learn the course off by heart. Personally, I think the game would have been a lot more fun if it had focused purely on sideways courses and got rid of the overhead stuff entirely. As it stands, this is an awesome Matt Gray SID track with budget motorcross game attached. The music is absolutely excellent and was a featured remix on Matt's Reformation remix album, released a few years back. If you're a fan of the C64, the albums are definitely worth picking up! The version on show here is the EasyFlash cartridge release, which packs in some additional screens not present from the tape version, plus removing loading times complete. The decision to remove the side-scrolling sections meant that some fans were torn as to whether they preferred Creatures or this sequel, but there's no denying that Creatures 2 is just a stunning achievement. John and Steve Rowlands, assisted by Andy Roberts, put together a game that oozes quality. The production values are unparalleled, and include the same trademark humour that made the original so special. I stumbled across the fact that the guys over at Nostalgia had released a new revamp of Capcom's arcade classic, Ghosts'n Goblins, for the C64. Anyone who played the original 1986 conversion by Elite will know that, although the game was pretty good, an awful lot had been cut out to get it to fit as a single-load tape game. I was curious to find out what kind of job the guys had done in writing this new version and I am pleased to say that it's excellent! Just about everything from the arcade game is present in this new rework. The new C64 version of G'nG features all of the original levels from the arcade and makes them full-length. Each level is divided into two sections, which I'm guessing was necessary to overcome technical limitations. Even so, there's absolutely no delay when changing scenes so there's nothing to interrupt the gameplay. The game's artwork is a considerable improvement over the 1986 version and somehow manages to be closer to the arcade yet pays suitable homage to the 1986 Elite version. The main Arthur sprite is better defined and now sports eyes, beard and even retains the wobbling visor on his armour from the arcade version. And if you thought Arthur looked good in his armour, just wait till you see him in his underpants! Of course, simply looking like the arcade version isn't worth much if the actual game doesn't play well. Fortunately, you have absolutely nothing to fear since the game plays like a dream and is easily one of the best conversions of the game for a home computer out there. All of the weapons from the arcade are present, although only the torch seemed to drop whilst I was recording and that is simply a weapon you never want to have. I did get the dagger during a previous game, but I wasn't recording at that point and never saw it drop again. Whilst the game is still incredibly tough, some things have been altered to make the whole experience less daunting. The soul-crushing punishment of being forced to play through the game for a second time has been removed, instead guaranteeing you the shield required to face the final boss during the first play-through.
