If you are looking for a low budget but powerful tool for mixing and recording small or no budget film projects and DO NOT NEED TIMECODE then the Rodecaster Pro has a lot to offer. From stand alone recording without a computer to isolated track recordings, the Rodecaster may very well be the best recorder with built in fader mixing surface on the market.
It's true that the Rodecaster Pro is a podcasting tool but many things in life have dual purposes and the Rodecaster Pro is one of those. Many small film projects shoot on DSLR or mirrorless cameras (sometimes even point and shoot or phones) but sound requires more than that. Provided it's set up correctly, the Rodecaster Pro could be everything you want it to be and in this video I show you how to set it up to give you the best mixing experience for small films.

Many people just getting into audio will make the same mistakes regarding equipment purchases. This usually leads people to buying gear because of price instead of quality and the result is disappointment.
Ever since I started Sound Speeds I've been asked about my recommendations for audio interfaces amongst other things. There are a few things to consider but most of it focuses around one thing and in this video I'm going to explain that one thing and show you why.
Just to be clear, EIN isn't everything and as I discussed in my video "Audio Noise - You're Nit-Picking The Wrong Thing" (https://youtu.be/Bx34nBsj5LA), EIN is very easy to process out and isn't the noise you should worry about. That said, you can easily gets great audio recordings using interfaces with 60+/- dB of gain.
NOTE ABOUT THE AUDIO:
Yes, I'm aware the audio sounds a bit clipped. Trust me, it was better than the raw recording. When I recorded my audio on the Deity HD-TX, I checked my audio when I first set the level but accidently adjust the gain stage feeding it prior to recording. I monitored the MixPre-6 during the audio tests instead instead of my level. After recording everything I realized what happened. Totally my fault but hey... I'm human and it was an honest mistake made in the middle of the night.

In Spring 2019 Deity released the Connect Wireless Kit and since then, they've been updating the firmware and working to make the experience better. Fast Forward to January 2020 and Deity released another variation of their wireless kit known as the Interview Kit. The big different between the two is that in the interview kit, one of the two BP-TX BodyPack transmitters has been swapped out for a cube style HD-TX HandhelD transmitter. The HD-TX provides phantom power thru an XLR jack allow you to turn a stick mic into a wireless mic or a boom pole into a wireless boom. This is a very welcome addition to the Deity Connect System!
In this review I don't repeat much of what I covered in my first Connect review so watch my Deity Connect Review if you'd like to learn about the menus, features, how the Connect's 2.4 GHz wireless system works, see durability tests, battery tests, etc. That review can be watched here:

Rycote, the company behind many of the best windscreens ever made, has entered the microphone game. Their HC-15 low profile short shotgun microphone and HC-22 short shotgun microphone entered the market in the later part of 2021 and for less than $800, each provides a detailed sound not found in most shotgun microphone today.
I know this review is long but it's a deep dive and worthy of being called an extensive testing of the Rycote HC-15 and HC-22. If ever you wanted to know how these microphones would do in real world comparisons, this video review is for you. I've been working on this video for months so I hope it is useful.

Cancel the Wilhelm Scream!
The Wilhelm Scream... You know you've heard many, many times. But do you hate it? I do... with a passion! I would even go so far as to say it's one of my least favorite sounds ever recorded? Why? Because it's overused.
It doesn't matter if it's someone falling off a cliff or a person falling into a swamp, it's used way too often in the world of film sound effects. Yes, it was used creatively in Star Wars: A New Hope back in 1977 as part of a fall but even there, it wasn't an acoustic match for the helmet wearing Stormtrooper.
In this video I'll go over the history of the Wilhelm Scream and then tell you why if I were to rub a lamp and be given 3 wishes... I'd contemplate using one to remove the Wilhelm Scream from existence (but wouldn't).

There are a lot of people online that tell you what not to do to ribbon mics but nobody has wanted to demonstrate those things for you... until today. In this video I do everything you're not supposed to do to ribbon microphones.
Do not do anything you see me do in this video! Any and all of these things will destroy a microphone. Attempting some of the things in this video could lead to injury or death.

Remember back to the beginning of the Covid shutdown and how you couldn't understand what anyone was saying thru all the masks? One year later you were accustomed to hearing people talk thru masks so understanding wasn't an issue anymore? Keeping that in mind...
If there's one thing that annoys me about modern content creation more than anything, it's when creators misuse their tools. One of the most common tools that's misused today is the lav mic. For whatever reason, creators started holding them and in this video I'm going to explain why that's not good.
