Who Was the Prophet Jonah, And Where Did His Loyalty Lie?
The OT book titled Jonah is the best known of all the writings of the minor prophets. That's because its more of a story about a prophet than a collection of judgments, condemnations, and predictions recorded by a prophet. Everybody loves a good fish story…

Jonah 1:1 this verse allows us to find Jonah in 1 Kings 14:23-25. He came from a town in northern Israel on the south coast of the sea of Galilee near Nazareth. He appears to be a part of the company of prophets surrounding the king of the norther tribes… Jeroboam II. The time frame would be 780 BC.... about 50 years before northern Israel would fall to the Assyrians.
The story of Israel spending 40 years in the desert is recorded for us as a lesson and a warning. God does not want us to make the same mistakes they made.
His desire is that we learn to live not by bread alone but by every word of God. To this end we are given the bread from heaven through Jesus Christ. The manna given to Israel in the wilderness did not lead them to everlasting life.
Specifically we are to be on guard against: idolatry, sexual immorality, testing God, and murmuring against God. These warnings are illustrated in the record of the golden calf, the seduction of the Moabite women, Israel's cries for water, and the rebellion of Korah.
Romans 8:28: “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”
Considering how different we are to be from the society around us you could conclude that we are called to separate ourselves… live in a monastery, a religious compound in the desert, be like the Amish. But no, we are expected to interact with others in the world to achieve a secondary, God ordained purpose. Like salt we are to act as a preservative, maintaining purity in a world of corruption. We are to be a light that shines into dark places… exposing evil and offering the truth of God in its place.

Since the very beginning there has been opposition to God's truth and His church. Some opponents even make the bold claim that Jesus death by crucifixion never happened.

The scriptural record combined with the Romans records of history indicate Jesus death came to pass by crucifixion... and the details of death by crucifixion match the prophecies. These aspects of the biblical record cannot be easily dismissed.
And in this way the death of Jesus serves as a powerful proof that the Bible is exactly what it claims to be… the word of God.

Exodus 20:7 says "You shall not use my name in vain".
The third commandment addresses how we communicate our feelings and thoughts about our Creator to others... and how we communicate those things to Him. It warns about our speech, behavior, and attitudes regarding the Father of all life... The 3rd commandment says: show some respect!
Respect is essential for a good relationship. We see this in marriage, business, communities. Expressing respect in ways that others notice and see is necessary. If I say "I respect you" but then ignore you, talk badly about you to others... then you know I don't respect you.
Respect is a way we demonstrate our love for God.
Pride is like a drug or strong drink... under its influence we do not have a clear head... we are not thinking soberly... our grip on reality is looser
Prior to this message I handed out a list of scriptures on the subject of pride roughly following the categories followed in the message. Here is a link to a PDF of that same list - https://www.ucg.org/system/storage/serve/1293001/scripture_list_-_what_is_pride.pdf
The proud person is intoxicated with... their self… they have a distorted view of who they are… that leads to an unwarranted self confidence and puts us into conflict with reality... Pride puts you in conflict with the living God who is the creator and sustainer of our reality…
James 4:6 God resists the proud but shows favor to the humble.

Sins of hostility and enmity are about how we think about others. Do we think of a treat others as friends, or enemies... are they family or are they rivals? This applies within the Church and outside the Church.
If God is going to raise you up to be seated with Christ and assist Him in the millennial rule and beyond... you have to build a positive outlook towards others.

Repentance is where the message of Christ and His church begins.
Repentance is how we begin the process of self examination, self correction, and self awareness. Repentance is the process whereby we change the direction of our life towards life rather than death. Repentance has real psychological and spiritual benefits. Repentance has an ongoing role in the life of every believer!

Repentance begins our spiritual journey. In repentance we cry out to God for forgiveness. We accept Jesus Christ as our savior. We surrender ourselves completely to God: and make a conscious decision to obey:
1) we commit to a change in our behavior and obedience We surrender our self to his will and do what He instructs us to do
2) we commit our self to a complete rewiring of our mind and spirit. We trust God to take control of our life, to use instruction, together with trials,
suffering, and other life experience to learn about our self... often to learn the awful truth about our self... and work together with Him to change it.
Neither of these commitments is easy or pleasant.
We may be tempted to take back control of our life… stop trusting in God so much… stop surrendering when we think God is asking too much of us.
But when we put trust and surrender together with confidence and Faith in God’s ability to deliver we can experience a combination of peace and joy.

The message of the prophet Haggai speaks to the living spiritual temple of God as much as the old Jerusalem Temple. The spiritual temple of God is alive and well in the 21st century. Living stones are still added daily to the foundation stone which is Christ.
The cornerstone and foundation is Christ and the members of God's Church are built up into a spiritual temple as living stones 1 Peter 2:4-5.
This understanding allows us to see the instructions and history of the physical temple in Jerusalem as having meaning and application for us today. The message of Haggai to the people tasked with rebuilding the temple in 520 B.C. is filled with inspiration and warnings. Those inspiring and warning words offer us much needed course correction and guidance.
Living stones are still being added to God’s new covenant temple. God still calls, chooses, and transforms people. We still have work to do in preparing a people for the day Christ returns.
Haggais message is a message of restoration and rebuilding. The full and complete restoration will come and it will begin with the return of Christ in power and glory. For it says "in that day" the kingdoms, governments, armies of humanity separated from God will be brushed aside and replaced by coming king of kings, and Lord of Lords.
Glory will be revealed… Peace will be administered through righteous rule with Christ as king of kings, and those who are Christ’s at His return seated at His right had as kings and priests.
The very people… who are now the little flock… who are being restored and rebuilt and prepared for the coming of the King.
The bible revelation tells us there is the Father and there is the Son, and they are God. They are two beings in a relationship based on love and commitment. Their example gives us spiritual guidelines for building Godly marriages... each partner fulfilling distinct roles in a spirit of unity. On the flip side, actively seeking to build a Godly marriage can help us understand the mind of God and what He's up to.
