Meyer Lansky (July 4th, 1902 – January 15th, 1983) godfather of the Jewish Mafia, responsible for the hired killers ‘Murder Incorporated’, guilty of the St Valentine’s Day Massacre, controlled the Kray twins in the East End of London and was instrumental in the development of the “National Crime Syndicate” in the United States. Born Meier Suchowlański in Grodno, in the Russian Empire (now Belarus) to a Jewish family in 1911, Lansky emigrated to the United States through the port of Odessa with his mother and brother, and joined his father, who had immigrated in 1909, and settled on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, New York. Lansky met Bugsy Siegel when they were teenagers. They became lifelong friends, as well as partners in the bootlegging trade. The two adroitly managed the Bugs and Meyer Mob with its reputation as one of the most violent Prohibition gangs. J Edgar Hoover was the 1st Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in office from March 23rd, 1935 – May 2nd, 1972. As early as New Year’s Eve 1936, after dinner at the Stork Club, Hoover was seen holding hands with his lover, Clyde [Tolson] and information now suggests that Meyer Lansky already had hard proof of Edgar Hoover’s homosexuality prior to his directorship and used it to neutralize the FBI as a threat to his own operations. Writer Pete Hamill recalled “they (the Mafia) told me Lansky had some pictures–pictures of Hoover in some kind of gay situation with Clyde Tolson. During WWII the Office of Naval Intelligence recruited criminals to watch for submarine-borne saboteurs (Operation Underworld). Lansky seized the opportunity to capture and beat up Americans of German decent. Lansky’s brother, Jacob “Jake” or “Jack” Lansky, in 1959 managed the Nacional Hotel in Havana, Cuba. In 1970, Lansky fled to Herzliya Pituah, Israel, to escape federal tax evasion charges. Two years later he was deported back to stand trial in the U.S. All this was clearly for show as Lansky was acquitted in 1974 the reason given that the testimony of loan shark Vincent “Fat Vinnie” Teresa, an informant had little or no credibility. Lansky undoubtedly played the largest role in the consolidation of the criminal underworld yet despite nearly fifty years as a participant in organized crime he was never found guilty of anything more serious than illegal gambling.
