If only I needed a new laptop... KDE Slimbook Review
The guys at Slimbook were nice enough to shower me with laptops to review, and one of these in particular caught my eye: the Slimbook KDE. It's a very, very fancy ultraportable laptop, made in collaboration with the KDE Community, and it's probably one of the best laptops I've ever used, even outside of the Linux world, so let's take a look

The laptop itself is running on an AMD Ryzen base. It comes in a 14 inch and a 15 inch version, and I got the 15 inch version. Both devices come with a Ryzen 7 4800H, which is a pretty powerful CPU, and are configurable with up to 64Gb of RAM, and 2Tb of SSD, with a large choice of keyboard layouts, as usual with Slimbook.
The laptop itself starts at 929 euros with 8Gb of RAM and 256Gb of SSD, which isn't cheap, but we're in premium laptop territory here, so it's not crazy either.
My review unit came with 16Gb of RAM and 250Gb of SSD, so it's pretty much your standard configuration. The 15 inch version only weighs 1.5kg, which really feels super light when you're carrying the thing around.
Now what's striking with this device is the build quality. The whole chassis is made out of Magnesium, and feels really sturdy. There is no screen wobble when typing, almost no give at all on the keyboard, and that thing doesn't creak, or bend. It's one of the best chassis I've seen from a Linux device manufacturer. Now this begs the question of WHY would they add stickers to such a nice chassis. No less than 4 were added to my review unit, one to tell you it's made out of magnesium, one to tell you it's running GNU/Linux, and 2 separate stickers for AMD graphics et ryzen 7.
Talking about they keys, it's one of the best keyboards I've used in a looong time. It doesn't use the usual chiclet style, but goes for floating keys. Key travel is just sufficient, with a nice bounceback on the keys, and a soft feeling when typing. The sound is also really pleasing to me for some reason, some kind of deep bump, far from the clacky noise of the Magic Keyboard I use on my desktop.

## Tribalism in tech
Technology is just as tribal as politics. What I mean by that, is that people pick a side, and stick to it for better or for worse, whatever the arguments, the logic, or the merits of the other side.
People tend to be tribal about technology: they like what they are used to, or what they just discovered, or the latest thing they buy, and they tend to be overly protective of their chosen product or service.
A few examples of this are Tesla owners, which tend to berate everyone not using a Tesla. iPhone owners versus Android users, Xbox vs Playstation, Mac vs Windows, Linux vs windows, or even Linux vs Linux.
Yeah, we, as a community, are just as prone as being tribal as everyone else, maybe even more so. As Linux users, we defend our chosen distro tooth and nail, and we try to convert people to our way of thinking, to our distro.
This is something that is increasing lately, probably because money and time are getting scarce for most people, and as such, you want to make sure that you're buying or using the right stuff. This means auto-convincing ourselves that our pick is the best one, not just for us, but for everyone, and that everybody who bought or uses something else is an idiot. It's easier than to accept that our choice might be the best for us, but not for others, because it would imply that our favorite distro, or tech product, has flaws, and as such isn't perfect for everyone.

## What I do
Let's begin with what I do: I'm a product owner, which means I'm basically a specification writer, tester, and planner all at once. I have to plan our development sprints in advance, write the specifications that our developers will follow to code what we need on our apps and websites, and work with our graphics designer to make nice mockups of the new features.
This means I need a versatile system that can let me multitask easily, and has a wide variety of applications.
## What I use at home
So there are 2 parts for what I use: I work from home 3 days a week, and at the office the other 2 days. Which means I have 2 setups: one with my laptop, and one with my desktop.
Let's start with the one you guys might be more familiar with: the desktop.
It's the same hardware I use to run the channel: my Slimbok Kymera desktop, with a ryzen 7 5800X CPU, an RTX 3070, 32Gb of RAM, and 2Tb of SSD. It's plugged in to my LG 35' ultrawide, with a 1440p resolution and 100hz refresh rate. On top of that, I use an MX Master 2S, and the slimbook RGB Keyboard.
In terms of software, the desktop runs Manjaro KDE. It's heavily customized: I use latte dock to add a dock at the bottom of the screen, and a top panel with the applications menu, a global menu bar, the date and time, and the indicators.
I use the Edna theme for Kvantum and plasma, with the inverse-blue icons, and I switched my titlebar buttons to have close and minimize on the left, and maximize on the right.

## THE COMPLETE CLONE
In that case, the option for you is WindowsFX. This distribution is based on Ubuntu LTS, virtually the most popular and used Linux version in the world, but you would be hard pressed to differentiate it, at first glance, from actual Windows 10. Everything here is made to be ultra familiar to Windows users, from the desktop layout to the start menu.
Now, it's not just a theme here, there are a LOT of things integrated out of the box to make Windows users comfortable: it's preinstalled with Microsoft Edge as a default browser, and the settings application has been completely tweaked to look like Windows 10's settings.
Now, WindowsFX uses the KDE Plasma desktop environment as a base, and some settings will reflect that, opening a dedicated window instead of being displayed in the settings app, but that's still pretty impressive. You even have a way to sync with OneDrive, right from the start.
You also have onlyoffice preinstalled, as well as shortcuts to Office Online. Basically, the goal here is to have as close a replica of Windows 10 as possible.
It also offers the ability to install Wine in one click, which gives you a compatibility layer to run Windows programs on Linux, just by downloading .exe files and running them as you'd expect on Windows.
## LOOK ALIKES
In that case, I'd recommend 2 options:
The first one is KDE Neon, using the KDE Plasma desktop environment. It's actually close to the windows layout by default, with a bottom bar that serves as your main way to interact with the applications and the system, and a nice start menu equivalent, with search capabilities, access to your files, applications and system controls.
The other advantage is that KDE Plasma is really very configurable: if a default behavior doesn't suit you, you will be able to change it, after spending a little time digging in the settings. That's probably what will be the biggest obstacle: learning where to find each

Some comments lately made me think about Linux, and who its users are. Is Linux that hard ? Am I biased for having used it too much, and things that seem easy to me are actually out of reach of regular users ? Here are a few thoughts !

Linux carries around a reputation of being complicated.
People often associate Linux wit the command line, thinking that it doesn't have a graphical interface.
These different issues can be explained quite simply.
First, the command Line issue. While it is true that Linux has a most effective terminal, and that everything can be done without a graphical user interface, you don't NEED it to use Linux. You can get by without it, 100%. The problem here is that most tutorials and help guides resort to giving command lines to solve problems. Instead of typing a long worded paragraph explaining where to click if you're using GNOME, and different instructions if you're using Plasma, etc..., it's often much more simple to just give a command line that will work for almost everyone.
Users that look for help don't really know that, though, so they go on thinking that the only way to solve issues is by using a terminal. In the end, it reinforces Linux's image of complexity.
Now, as per having a GUI, Linux is actually the most graphic system there is, with so much choice to make your desktop look like anything you want. There are probably more options to configure KDE than there is on Windows, and if you prefer the Mac OS X way, GNOME, elementary OS or Deepin can suit you perfectly. This much choice can seem daunting at first though. People who want to try Linux for the first time just want to use "Linux". They don't know the concept of distribution, of desktop environment, of package manager, so they end up confused, or downloading the coolest looking distro, which is often one that isn't as well supported or has more issues than others.
Another misconception is that Linux will just work as Windows or Mac OS X. It's often billed as "it's like X but it's free and you can do anything". This is not a good way to onboard new users: they come in expecting things to work like they did on their previous OS, and they expect the programs they used to work as well. But once they're on their Linux desktop,, there is a learning curve, that can be quite steep, or very low, depending on which option they picked.
And the software.. if they'll find the staples, like Firefox, Chrome, VLC, Spotify, and others, it's quite easy for a newcomer to imagine that MS Office, Photoshop, and others will run just fine. Even though it only releases a new version every two years, the team doesn't stay idle either, and the OS has matured and gained a lot of new features since it released in october 2018. Desktop
While Pantheon's metaphor stayed the same, with a top bar and a dock, a lot of improvements have been added to the desktop itself.
In the Application menu, it's now possible to search for system settings panels, such as display, or keyboard. You can also look for system actions, in the language you selected or in english, such as reboot, shutdown, etc...
The indicators also have seen a lot of work: the date and time indicator now makes it clearer which day is the current one, and which day you've selected. The Bluetooth indicator has been largely revamped, with device names written in bold, and using a dedicated icon depending on which peripheral type it is. Each device also will show a badge to indicate its connection status.
The session indicator now displays keyboard shortcuts to lock the session, and logout, and the sound indicator now allows middle clicking on the microphone icon to mute audio input, and scrolling over its icon to adjust input volume.
Applications
Music has better sorting of tracks in all its various modes, and now sports an orange accent color, to match its icon. Music also now supports the older s3m file format, and its album art is now displayed at full resolution on Hi-DPI displays, which should make its interface really shine.
Files' search is now more discoverable, displaying a search icon in the path bar. You can now enable or disable thumbnails for documents and images.
Keyboard navigation has been improved, allowing you to cherry pick and select individual files or folders. Files also has seen a lot of code rewrite in 8 months, and should now be faster across the board, and use less memory.
elementary's calendar app has also been tweaked a bit, especially in the looks department. Events will now make better use of color, and you can pick a specific color for each calendar, from a selection based on elementary's color palette. These colors will be displayed in the calendar list, to make it easier to identify which calendar you want to display or not. When creating an appointment, you can also search through calendars, which should help users managing a lot of those.
The calendar app also has been given a nice lime color accent, in keeping with its application icon.
