So you've decided to head to Darwin in the Top End of Australia and you're probably wondering What can I do? Well wonder no more. Around 70 kms south of Darwin, Litchfield National Park, the park is about 1500 sq km and was named after Fred Litchfield, an early British explorer of the region. We start the tour at the termite mounds. These mounds can get up to 3 metres tall, and over 100 years old. Across Litchfield, these enormous termite mounds always face north and south and take decades to build. Termites need constant temperature and the alignment acts as a temperature regulator. Aborigines also used them as compasses. Next is Buley Rockhole. A natural water spot ideal for swimming, or just cooling down. Just down from Buley is Florence Falls. An amazing waterfall that you can swim under. WIth camping nearby this spot is ideal to just take your time at. The twin Falls empty into the emerald green plunge pool. The falls are at the base of a monsoon rainforest with an easy access lookout. Aboriginal men call the falls on the left the Sugar Glider Place while the larger falls on the right are called the Cycad Place. This is one of Litchfield’s best cool pools and not as busy as Wangi. Tolmer Falls - the most biggest and spectacular water fall. Walk around the 1.6k track, or go straight to the observation points. You wont be disappointed here, with jaw dropping views for miles to see. Leaving the best until last - Wangi Falls. Wangi Falls is one of Litchfield’s most popular attractions. Two main streams tumble down from the top into a broad plunge pool. What isn’t generally known is that this popular swimming spot was, and still is, a “special place” for Indigenous women. The water is clear and relaxing. Head up the Treetop viewing deck, or walk around the track to the top of the falls. Remember - The pool is occasionally closed if significant rainfall raises water levels high enough for crocodiles to gain access. Litchfield National Park is a hiker’s paradise and an amazing place to visit.
