Italy refuses to grant visas to three Ghanaian curators

A Venice Architecture Biennale director has spoken out against the Italian government for denying visas to three Ghanaian curators.
Lesley Lokko, who organized the 18th event, said the ruling highlighted the "ugly rear" of Italian immigration policy but emphasized that it was not "the defining story of this exhibition."

Three Ghanaian curators were denied entry to Italy in order to attend the 20th International Architecture Exhibition (May 20 – November 26) in Venice. They were heading to Italy to assist Lesley Lokko, the event's first curator of African descent and the person in charge of the trip.

Participants at the 2023 Biennale will come from all over the world, although more over half will be African or of African descent. Because Lokko is the leader, of course. The biennial will focus on the "Laboratory of the Future."

According to Lokko, the organizers were not issued visas since it was assumed they would try to leave the event without permission and enter Italy illegally. "Not all teams are equal," Lokko stated at her debut press conference. She continued by saying that the expulsion of her Ghanaian coworkers was evidence of Italy's "ugly rear" in terms of immigration policy. She hoped that the news wouldn't detract from the opening of the Biennale, saying, "Right now, this is a big story, but it can't be the main story of this exhibition." Those words sum up my feelings exactly: "That's too easy, too predictable, and too cheap."

The three men's visa applications were denied by the Italian Ambassador to Ghana, Daniela d'Orlandi. Lokko, she claims, is attempting to lure "non-essential young men" into the Schengen area of Europe.

d'Orlandi, according to a statement made by Lokko on Twitter, is a "ambitious career diplomat looking to make her mark with a right-wing government." She was referring to the recent October 2022 election of populist Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni of Italy. Meloni ran on a platform that was strongly opposed to immigration.

The African Futures Institute has engaged personnel from Lokko. The Ford Foundation, the Mellon Foundation, and Bloomberg Philanthropies are all contributing to this effort.

The arts are only one area where the United States Embassy is eager to work with Ghana, as d'Orlandi stressed in his letter. We'll stop at nothing to get Ghanaian artists into major art shows and festivals in Italy.

She explained that the government of Italy could not provide visas to the three Ghanaian curators because it would violate EU regulations.

She noted in the statement, "It would be too narrow to focus only on a few visa refusals." "These denials are due to Italy and the other Schengen countries' strict adherence to the law."
