Since starting this channel in 2017 my goal has been to teach sound in ways that many other people can't or won't. Professional sound people don't often teach non-professionals the secrets they've spent their lives learning but on this channel, I'm not afraid to do that. I've been teaching sound classes since 2013 and Sound Speeds is an extension of those classes and brings to the internet, lessons I teach in the real world. With hundreds of videos in my archive you have days of content you can watch to learn about all aspects of sound from podcasting to boom operating to technical training.
If you enjoy content like that which is teased in this video, I welcome you to subscribe for weekly video releases.

Cleaning an XLR cable and/or connector seems like a common sense, straight forward thing but if you don't do it properly, you can damage the cable and connectors. Corrosion must be stopped while conductivity is maximized otherwise your connectors won't last long. With proper care, your XLR cables and connectors should last you a long time.
In this video I will show you my technique for cleaning XLR cables and connectors. These products are available in America and may not be available in your country. If that is the case, please write in the comments below what products you use to clean your XLR cables and connectors.
Note: The methods I'm teaching can be used for cables and connectors other than XLR.

If you're a professional sound pro or use UHF wireless frequencies in any kind of professional capacity, you should strongly consider getting your LCC Part 74 license. In addition to all the reasons I go over in this video, it lets the FCC know you're using them and it may influence their future decisions if they are considering to further limit the amount of spectrum we can use.
There are services online that will apply for your FCC license for you but following the directions in this video, you really can't go wrong. The FCC license is a tax write-off and only costs around $170 at the time of this video for an 8 year license.

This may seem like a weird review for a sound channel but it involves RF and that's one thing sound people understand so that's how we got here. There are many reviews of this product on YouTube talking about comfort and what comes in the case but I concentrate on what others don't, like the technical. This review focuses on factors other reviews don't. I hope you find it helpful.

Remember back to the beginning of the Covid shutdown and how you couldn't understand what anyone was saying thru all the masks? One year later you were accustomed to hearing people talk thru masks so understanding wasn't an issue anymore? Keeping that in mind...
If there's one thing that annoys me about modern content creation more than anything, it's when creators misuse their tools. One of the most common tools that's misused today is the lav mic. For whatever reason, creators started holding them and in this video I'm going to explain why that's not good.

If you're into sound and in the market for a boom arm then you may be in luck! Most often you hear different recommendations for many models of boom arm but sometimes they are too long, bend at awkward angles or are just too big for where you need them. For this reason you have have to settle for a low quality option that barely holds you microphone up but likely, it'll still be too big for you.
This video was the result of my brainstorming this exact problem and I came up with an inexpensive solution that is still strong enough to hold up a large diaphragm microphone over my head at my computer.

You may have heard me say that you should use roll off/ high pass/ low cut filters - whatever you want to call it when hand holding a microphone in a shockmount... but why? It all boils down to rumble picked up in the mic. Typically the human voice doesn't go below about 85Hz so why should you record below that when you'll likely pick up a bunch of noise? In this video we'll explore that very topic!
Please note that this only applies to film and television sound recording. If you're in a studio and don't touch the mic, you likely don't need to use roll off.
